Seneca - Shopsy&Folded Tourney Report

Okay, this is going to be short and sweet as I don't remember many hands.

First tournament we played in was the $150+20 $3500 chips and 15 minute blind levels. Blinds certainly quick, but, had 108 register for this one. Top 18 paid, basically 10-18 made $300US and then up from 9th and down.

We are at break with 19 left and we realize at least one of us with cash in this. I eventually bust for 13th and Shopsy 8th. They withhold our 30% tax and I cash for $210 and Shopsy for $325 or so.

Next night, big $200+20, 30 min blind levels and $4,000 chips. I am gathering chips early with so unusual aggressive play. We are down to about 60 on break and we are both still in it again! 160 registered for this one.

I believe Shopsy busts at 27th and I am still alive with about $28,000 with average of $30,000 or so with 20 left. Top 18 pay again with 10-18 getting $400 and top prize over $9,000.

We have 19 remaining and I'm in the big blind. There is about 23 seconds left before the 45 minute dinner break. The last 4 orbits, button who has slightly less than me has shoved with all folds in front of him and gather the pot at 1200 / 2400 with 100 ante or something like that.

10 seconds left he raises to $5,000???? SB folds and I see AH 6H. I call. (Now here's what got me in trouble). Of the last 40 hands, the button has acted out of turn with all in moves on 3 of 6 hands post flop.

I "re-check" my cards, just as I am about to shove, he acts out of turn and says all in! Now I need to think. We are on dinner break and if call, I have about $4K left and basically out?

I think about it, flush draw, probably an over and a gutshot? I CALL !
He flips K 10 offsuit.

Turn 6C. Okay, a few more outs.

River a brick. If I act quicker post flop, he lays down the hand and I am in probably at least 8-10th spot after dinner.

First hand after dinner I'm the button and shove with A 8 for a chop. Up to $7K or so.
Still at 19, I'm under the gun and see AC QC. I shove, 2 callers.
Flop JD 10D 5S
Turn 7D (now chipleader and 3 in chips are both all in and I know I'm done)
River JC

Chipleader shows 55 and 3rd place is gone with AD 2D. He busts 18th and I bubble at 19.

Good tourneys, good players but some donks.

Good to make the trek and we both went pretty deep in both. Tiring poker though.

  • Nice Job Cory! Talked with with Shopsy yesterday. Glad you made a good showing, I guess we only know your game to well at this way, LOL, that never would have happened in a tournament in KW.

    Prophet :2h :2s
  • Nice work guys, so they withheld the 30% from even small cashes? Typically in Vegas at the casinos that withhold the 30% from Canadians it is only for cashes over either 800 or 1200, can't recall which... Wonder why they withhold for such small amounts..
  • My understanding is that anything under 600 USD is not subject to the 30%. I ended up chopping a Flamingo tournament in Vegas last year, where they informed us that if the final 4 all took 550, there would be no tax applied.

This may be a state specific number though.
  • Nice job!

Does the 30% withholding make it -EV for most players?
What's the process to get part of it back?
  • The winner of The_Game's satellite made it to the money in the U$200 Friday event, but also had 30% of his prize withheld even though it was less than $1200. :(

Since most Canadian players won't end up applying for a refund, the 30% becomes an unbeatable additional rake from the US government. An "average" player who wins $10,000 after entering 10 $1,070 tournaments would have lost $700 (Seneca's total rake), but because of the 30% withholding, his loss increases to $3,700! A very good player who only takes an average of 7 tournaments to win a $10,000 prize will still end up losing money. Playing taxable games in the US has become highly -EV for most Canadians!
