Hypothetical Situation

Say it's down to 4 or 5 handed. You're sitting with 200 chips in the BB for 16.
You're Holding Qs5c

Action goes Fold, (Fold), Button calls, SB calls, You check.

Flop comes Q97 all clubs. Check, Check, You bet out 30. Fold, Call.

Turn is anything from 2-6 none club, and now the SB bets out 50.

What would you do? And in most cases what do you think your opponent has?

Comments

  • I'd probably fold, he could have a stronger Q and was a little worried about a four flush and just called the flop with no club and wants to end the hand now. Or maybe JT with a club and making a move, then again he may have flopped a low flush and again is worried about a fourth club.

Just think you can find a better spot, you'd still have 150+ chips, though not sure of relative stack sizes.
  • Fold. No raise preflop I'd fear someone caught a low flush or 2 pair with crap cards or maybe someone snuck in with a low pair and tripped. I don't like the bet size either, I doubt he's trying to buy it. It is your place to raise again but he's worried you might check and the pot won't get bigger so he raises ahead of you. I always am wary of an early position that checked after the flop then called a raise that comes out raising after the turn. A good patient player will wait for late position to raise again to make his move. Not that much in the pot... I'd let it go.

On the other hand it would be easy to push someone off a situation like that. He might still just be making a play at it with just a decent club. I'd weigh it 25% he's making a play, 75% you're beat.

Don't forget it's not just $50 you have to call... he's likely to raise much more after the river.

Of course I don't know anything about the player which may change things.

so that includes me hitting my 5 for two pair...? i guess it doesn't matter too much.

in any case, i probably would have checked the flop and seen a free turn card. i know most people would disagree with me on this one, but here's my reasoning. if i'm going to put my opponent on a flush or top pair with better kicker (ie. if i bet the flop and he calls or raises) i've lost already. betting the flop just helps him out. if he's willing to fold to a flop bet (probably to a flush or even TPTK) then he'll probably fold to the same bet on the turn. so then why bet the flop? i'd only bet the flop against a tight player i know would fold easily.

personally, i'd check to see a free turn hoping to hit trips or two pair - although that still doesn't put me ahead necessarily. now if my opponent leads out with a bet, it's easier for me to fold since i've only put in the BB so far. also, if i really feel like he doesn't have the flush, i can try and represent it here (ie. i could have just slowplayed it on the flop) with a raise over top of him. if he reraises back i fold. if he calls i stop all my action (unless i feel that firing another bullet on the river could make him give up the hand).

if my opponent just checks the turn then i'm more then likely put in a bet to knock him off the hand (since i don't think him slowplaying the flush all the way to the river would be a good play, but it's possible). then same as above applies: if he raises me i fold. if he calls i stop my action.

since there was no preflop raise then it is a possibility that my opponent could have hit two pair with anything. however, he definitely should have bet his two pair on the three club flop to protect it. if he was 'slowplaying' his two pair then i'm going to make him pay dearly for that mistake - ie. i'm going to bet like i have the flush. if he hit two pair on the turn, i'm going to bet in order to make him think it's still not good enough to beat my 'flush'.

obviously turn and river action can vary to certain degrees. however, despite the following: three cards to the flush on the flop tend to scare people, and top pair weak kickers usually warrant some type of feeler/protector bet -in this scenario i'd try to 'slowplay' my own 'flush' and try to push him off the hand on the turn. if he's slowplaying an actual flush, then it's costing me less chips for a better chance at taking down the pot. it also helps me avoid the decision that you're faced with now - ie. calling, folding, or raising to 50 bet on turn with top pair crap kicker.

to answer your question, i'd fold in your situation. however, personally i would have tried to avoid that situation altogether.
  • My bad, the guy also has you covered by like 50-100 chips.

Okay, so I get the feeling most of you would dump the hand. Now what if the turn brought a 5 to give you 2 pair? Since this is hypothetical if you could reply using different types of players?

I'm just trying to get alot of input cause I find these types of hands are where I get really frustrated laying down 2 pair, or call and get beat by another 2 pair/trips/flush.

So again same action, but the turn brings a 5, what would you?
  • Q:What hand check/calls you and then leads out less than 1/2 pot on the turn?

    A:One that's beating you.

Two pair usually shouldn't even call the turn-if you have any respect for your opponent a/q, k/q would be raising oop pre. So you're losing to too many of the hands we can put him on.
  • Good advice. I think i'm gonna try to lay these down, or at most call small bets to fill up on the river.
  • Bla bla bla...what hand do you possibly want to call you with a 2/3 pot bet, 3 handed out of position? You are not trying to build a pot here. You want them to fold. What a waste of chips. Push or fold on the flop. Probably push since the 48 chips already in the pot represents 25% of your stack. Christ, with 2 limpers, if I read them as non-trappy type players, I probably push preflop.

It's 5 handed people. His m is less than 10. Weak. So weak. I think I am going to be sick. Blurrgh.
  • I used to loose the most money on 2 pair because I could just never lay it down. You have to learn when to lay it down. The next step after that is learning when your trips are beat and laying them down... that one really hurts ;)
