Omaha

I play just low limit texas hold em.But while at Soaring Eagle in Michigan last week they had a Omaha game going.I have never played the game but would have liked too.Can anyone tell me if Omaha is a more difficult game than hold em to play or easier.I realize that the only difference is that you get four cards instead of two,but is the play the same or is it different. In other words ,what surprises am l going to experience if l do decide to play. Thanks

  • It's not quite the same....

You get 4 cards, but you can ONLY use two of your cards, and you HAVE to use 3 cards from the board.... that is the ONLY possible combination... you cannot have a full house unless the board is paired, you can't have a flush without three of the suit on the board, etc etc....

As for difficulty? Personally, I think that at lower limits, if you have a decent understanding of starting hands, and can handle the swings (which are higher variance that NLHE), it's the most profitable game online.

Easier / harder? Hard to say... you need discipline to fold things like two pair, straights, under full houses etc.

  • i personally haven't played a lot of omaha online (and never in person), but from my limited experience so far i find that most players online dramatically overplay weaker hands in omaha. since you start out with four cards, hands like top pair and two pair are very common place. if the board pairs there is a high likelyhood of a boat out there; likewise if three to the flush hits there's a good chance there's a flush. i've managed to do pretty well playing omaha online by staying tight and watching everyone else go down swinging with TPTK or bottom two pair and other similar 'weak' hands. however, i'm still in the dark as far as hand odds and the like, but i'm convinced that online omaha is easily beatable since most players play their hands like it's a holdem game.
