Will the Real Cdn Championship please stand up

I'm annoyed by the fact that there appears to be two Canadian Championship Tournaments this year.

There is the Cdn Championships in Edmonton on Oct 9th (which has been called as much for at least a few years as far as I know)

AND...

There is the Tournament in Regina on Nov 12th? (for all I know THIS has been the Cdn Championship for ages but I don't really know)

SO, what should we be calling the Canadian Poker Championship and which winner should we be calling the Canadian Poker Champion? It's really foolish organization on the part of the Canadian Poker Tour to have these two tournaments labeled as such. In order to help this game gain in appeal, these kinds of things should be sorted out in a formal way.

Am I missing something?

  • Oh... and on a similar note, I had a tourney in my basement last week that I decided was the Canadian Poker Championships. We had 6 players show up and I won!

So I guess I'm the Canadian Champion! Cool

As far as I can tell, the CPT has got nothing to do with the naming of poker tournaments.

  • True, I suppose the CPT has nothing to do with the naming of poker tournaments but it does have some say (I would hope) in what tournaments are a part of it's season. If a regular PGA tour stop decided one day that it was going to call itself the US open (one month after the US open) something would have to give.

Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying here. I think the CPT is obviously about the best step in terms of organization that poker has ever seen in this country. All I am saying is that things like this should be ironed out. AND, perhaps I'm too quick to jump on the CPT's back about this. I just think that there should be a governing body with regards to poker competition in Canada and the CPT seems like the most likely candidate.

I'll be honest about the fact that I do not really understand the organization of poker in this country right now. Perhaps this all makes some sense in a way that is currently beyond my understanding. I'd love to hear some feedback from those knowledgeable about such things

  • Some year's ago I attempted to protect the phrase "Canadian Poker Championship." Such phrases cannot be copyrighted because they are too generic. I think (not 100% certain) that you see this in PGA events. There is no "U.S. Golf Championship." There is a "U.S. Open" and a "P.G.A. Championship" because those phrases can be protected, and thus, marketed.

Casino Regina was first to claim "Canadian Poker Championship" but Edmonton was not far behind and for all I know Edmonton was planning theirs when Regina laid claim to the name which makes it essentially a tie.

The CPT (organized by Can Poker Player Magazine) is the scorekeeper. We are not the overseer and we are definately not regulators in any way.

We are grateful to those casinos who have gotten on board and share the vision of a Canadian Poker Tour. Basically, we think that the tour will be good for everyone -- casinos, players, and our magazine. Most seem to share that vision and we are thrilled to be at the start.

    Dave, I agree.

To me (and maybe only to me) it just seems unfortunate that there is not a clear cut 'Big one' for Canadian players in the same way that the WSOP is the 'Big One' on the larger scale.

Ultimately, Perhaps Canada is onto something better because I suspect a 'Big One' might still emerge and this could be the CPT Championship. This Tourney will have the advantage of being an invitational for proven players which culminates from an entire season of play.

I suppose the 'Big One' in many other sports is not always associated with a national or world championship anyways. The Stanley Cup, Mr Olympia, etc...
The only problem with this theory is that the 'Big One' is usually also the one with the biggest prize and in that case it would probably still be the Regina Tourney.

If Players all seemed to pretty much agree that the Regina tourney is the 'Big One' then if I were a Casino Exec in Edmonton I'd be strongly thinking about changing the name of that tourney to the Canadian Open or some other thing.

  • The planning for the CPT Championship is a long way away complete. A long way. At this point, it is not seen as an invitational event. It will be an open event (I think... nothing is certain). Much like the WPT Championship is an open event even though a certain number of players have their way paid in.
