Hello Again - Farewell!

Moose asked what happened to me (http://pokerforum.ca/showthread.php?t=11757), so I thought I should reply. Basically, there are 3 reasons: personal, poker, and forum, although they are somewhat intertwined.

While I was really enjoying playing and doing fairly well, I was feeling rather unfulfilled personally. I simply don't have enough hours in a day to do everything I want to. The time I was using to play poker was less time spent working, playing with the kids, and being with my wife. Right now is a very important time for the company I work with, and we have a window of opportunity right now that requires a lot more of my time. Also, while I was at Disney in October, I really enjoyed all the dedicated time with my kids, and I started to realize how little time I was spending with them regularly (in order to play poker, or catch up on work/chores to make up for time playing poker). Over the Christmas holidays (when I had more time off with the family), I started reevaluating things.

I started playing poker as a hobby. I did really well at it, so I took it more seriously and got better at it. Then I started making money at it so started spending more time to capitalize on that opportunity. However, this turned poker into work for me, and it started being less fun. Once it was less fun, the time missed with the family (who are growing too fast) or working (since I love my job) started bothering me more. Basically, the only thing poker was doing for me was financial, and that simply wasn't enough. I also missed having fun playing. Early in the year, just before the Royal Cup, I made a decision to stop playing poker except for recreation. Since then, I've only played for fun, primarily live (my on-line games are limited to a couple hours every week or two now).

In answer to Moose's original question - since I'm not playing much, I really don't have much to post about. Also, my personal opinion is that 90% of the posts on the forum are no longer the type of stuff I want to read. I don't know if it's me and that I'm looking for something more, or if it's the content of the forum that has changed (although I have an opinion ;) ). However, the reason is irrelevant - I simply don't spend as much time on the forum anymore. While I used to be on a few times an hour, now I only read the forum a few times a week. I'm still around, I just don't have anything to contribute right now, but if I do, I'll post. So it's not really farewell, but I'm going to become part of the scenery rather than the action for a while...

Trevor

p.s. Cook Crew events will be returning soon - sorry for the long hiatus

  • I admire your honestly and straight-forwardness. It's good to hear that you won't be leaving us, or quiting the game.

Good for you for stopping to smell the roses. Or least slowing down and rolling down the window. :D

  • Thanks for letting us know. I had gotten the feeling something wasn't right. We were talking about you again at the CHPC. I'm glad that it was a rededication to your family that caused your absence. Obviously your poker family noticed, and will miss you.
  • You ARE missed Beanie. Your insights in the game and your ability to spell out situations and resolutions are always appreciated and I found them to be very helpful in my own game.

Don't be a stranger, Trevor. And I hope to meet you across the felt again soon.
  • Great Post Trevor. I too have not played much on line either. I am playing live as I love the interaction between me and the other players. I"m glad your not wasting your time but spending it more wisely (with family with work etc.). If the cook crew games come back sign us up. Your tourney's are great.
  • I hear you, on so many levels, with this post. Nice to hear that you're enjoying life with family & at work.

Hopefully Chris and I can make it out to a Cook Crew event one of these days!
  • I think a lot of us are in the same boat; I have gone through the exact same issues over the last year and have cut back playing online and only play live about twice a month. I took a three month break this year and found that I missed having this free time for myself. For me, poker is purely for recreation and I don't really worry about spending $50-$100 in an afternoon. I think of it as an alternative to playing a round of golf, where I would probably spend $100 on lost balls anyways. For me, playing poker once in a while gets me away from the daily grind and I really find it relaxing, and in the end it makes me a better husband and father. You really need to find time for yourself as if you are not happy, it will reflect in your relationships with your family. With five kids, there are a lot more things to keep you busy. You can always come back to poker later in life anyways. Thanks for posting on this topic.
  • Given the chance I found that I was playing poker daily. As a result I was ignoring other options and/or necessary alternatives to filling my time with poker. I have essentially quit playing on line and untill recently stopped playing the games around Milton. Now I go once or twice a week, more for the recreation and comaradary (sp?). I must admit I am golfing quite a bit, but early morning tee times does not interfere with still being around for the family. I WILL try to make the journey back to Kitchener for a game, when it fits into me new revised schedule. The offer of cold beer can usually coax me out! Just a suggestion. Hope to see you bandits again, in the near future.

Ah, you're in the same boat as me. Except I spend $150 :D
  • For 99% of us, poker is fun entertainment that hopefully pays for itself.
