Two men suspected of running an illegal casino from a café have been dealt a losing hand, as Halton Region police raided their operation yesterday.

After obtaining a search warrant, police raided Speers Café, on Pinegrove Rd. in Oakville, and uncovered a quantity of cash, four poker tables, four video lottery terminals, poker chips and video surveillance equipment.

The men have been subjects of investigation since 2006.

An undercover police officer went to the café and played Texas hold ‘em poker several times, police said.

Oakville residents Mario Caputo, 50, and Antonio Caputo, 29, are charged with keeping a common gambling house "

So, what's the deal with this ...
Is it the VLT terminals that did em in ???

Seriously though, someone must have complained to the cops or they were very brazen about it.
  • I am offended that my tax dollars are going toward this when there are other things going on in society that need addressing AND when the police are constantly bitching that they don't have enough manpower.
  • The location was at a very small strip mall in the middle of a residential neighborhood. It was a very common knowledge a high stakes game was going on there. 25/50 nl was the rumuor. Perhaps the neighbors complained.
  • I grew up near Pinegrove Plaza. I know that where I live now there's a $20 tournament game in a "certain nonspecific store" in a strip mall, though I've never gone myself....only because I just haven't had the time. But unless there are complaints of a scam (cheating, whatever) going on, I think the police should have bigger fish to fry.

Problem is, with the U.S. taking such a big shot at online gambling, people automatically assume that it's evil and support actions like this. (After all, we wouldn't want to crack down on the identity theft people who steal homes, or murderers, or other things like that that aren't nearly as evil as a neighbourhood poker game! Sheesh!)
  • :ah lol thats jokes..
