Comments on My Play

Home game

7 players to start with 5000 T chips. We are down to 3 players, top 2 get paid. All 3 players have pretty much even stacks (~11500) and blinds at 2000-4000. BB has been getting shit lucky all night (for example calling an all-in raise with Q4off suit vs KK and flopping a boat) so his confidence is high and he is quite capable of calling with any 2 cards. SB is fairly conservative and respects my play. I am on the button and pick up 77 and push.

First question: does pushing here make sense? I obviously thought so, based on my M value.

Second question: if pushing doesn't make sense here, how should I have played this?

Oh yeah, you probably guessed I ran into a big hand: AKo, and he flopped an ace and turned a king so I was out!

Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • No offense, but if the blinds are 2k/4k with only 35k in play, I think it's actually a flipament, not a tournament at that point.

How often do blinds increase, do they get capped

People think the natural think is to push. The question you have to ask yourself:

    1) if you call and they raise are you calling either of their all - ins with Pocket 7 7?

    2) if you fold can you still win the tournament?

    3) are you willing to lose with a pocket pair without knowing any of the cards that may?

    4. if blinds are capped and you had 60K everyone else is within 5K of you what do you do

g2 is right it is a coin flip and there is nothing wrong with pushing. Answer my questions and I will be back tomorrow night to give you some more things to consider

PS the bottom line for this post is you ran into a big hand, you know you did th right thing evryone on this board would have push. And everyone including you would have called the push with AK. There is no real play for poker here but to shove. The reasons for my questions is to understand how you think about the game.

  • Your trny structure is flawed, with the blinds being that high. Obvious shove....only option.
  • Blinds weren't being capped (it was getting late and we were all pretty tired...) and they were increasing every 25 minutes (at this point we were about half way through the round and they were to be 3k-6k next round)
It's not my tourney so I don't really have any say in the structure.

    To answer your questions:
    1. I would definitely call the all-in from the BB and at this stage probably also the SB.

2.I suppose if the deck hit me in the face I could win the tournament.

3.I think you were asking about the flop and my hand... there was the ace and then my 77 was higher than the other two board cards... both players would be capable of betting the scare card ace so I think I would have called

4.If the blinds were capped (and I have 60 K) then my M is bigger, I probably put in a standard raise and then C-bet if no one bets, hoping to take it down then. If someone bet ahead of me I think I call one reasonably sized bet and re-evaulate on teh turn. If I get callers I re-evaluate on the turn (when the K fell) and probably fold to any action at that point.

    Thanks for the ideas.
  • thanks for responding. you know with the structure you did the right thing, If you see the flop and he bets. you fold. If you see t he flop and he checks and you try to represent the Ace he calls and you are still out. that is poker. you just ran into a hand plan and simple,

    Just my thoughts

  • Thanks for the feedback guys.
  • Yeah, pretty standard play. Just the cards didn't fall right for you.
