Pointless question time.

In a NL texas holdem tournament, when it gets heads-up, the dealer is the small blind.
In a heads-up NL texas holdem cash game, the dealer is the small blind.
In a limit texas holdem tournament, when it gets heads-up, the dealer is the small blind.
In a heads-up limit texas holdem cash game, the dealer is the big blind.

This may be an unimportant, 'who cares' kind of question, but I'm curious as to why it would be different for a limit cash game. Anyone know, or is it 'just one of those things'... and if it is just one of those things, doesn't this give the big blind a huge edge in a limit HU cash game? Bigger than if he was the small blind and the button? I realize that both of the players would obviously have the same overall advantage (because the last time I checked, the button moves around a bit :) ) but still...

Anyways, anyone know why the 'dealer/blind' heads-up rules are different for limit cash games?

Thanks,

  • Wow, i've been playing all my homes games such that NL tournament thats the dealer is BB (pay to act last), Oh well, now I know.

This seems unusual to me. Where did you see this?

Is this how it was when a multi-handed online table happened to be down to two players? Some software might do heads-up blinds wrong if it's expecting more players at the table. That is, a table which is not designed for heads-up might just mindlessly put the SB in the "usual" spot to the immediate left of the button.

I just saw a $10-$20 LHE heads-up table at UB that used the small blind button rule. And the micro-limit heads-up tables at PokerStars where shnoobs ocasionally takes me to the cleaners in $1 cash game freezeouts are played with the SBB in both the limit and no-limit versions.

Also, it doesn't really make much sense to me that this rule should be implemented differently whether you're playing limit or no-limit.

  • Hey Scotty,

Thanks for clearing that up for me... I think my mistake was indeed that I was looking at a heads-up limit cash game on a 'regular' table. So, yes, there was an expectation of more players entering the game. This was at Stars, btw. Glad to see it's consistent across the board... thanks again.
