I think the most and for most reason of poker popularity is poker has recently made the evolutionary jump from being viewed as a game to being viewed as a sport and also because increased media coverage of high-stakes poker games in United States.

Yes I am new to this forum and learning poker as well. I just ask the simple question of poker popularity that’s it and nothing else.. and I have nothing to do with raxi and niki.
The rise in popularity in Canada could be linked to the NHL lockout a few years ago. When there was no hockey, tv stations started airing plenty of poker. My two cents.

I used to think that too, except that the majority of Americans (which was the majority of players until the recent legislation) isn't really into hockey. I haven't come up with a much better reason, but the lockout probably only contributed for Canada (and the trend had already started in the US).
I only start playing seriously about 3 yrs ago.
To me it's like a game of chess which i used to play although not for money
The thrill is to be able outmanouver your opponent/s and also win their money at the same time!!
Its a simple game to play but a tough game to master and the challenge is to get yourself to another level to challenge all comers..
TV and media did pull more people in the game and add glamor and thrill to the game. When is bluffing legit and glamorous in any other game?
my 2 cents worth
i think the popularity is more due to the fact anyone can play and anyone can win, wasn't the first major breakthrough event on the WPT tour a $1 million dollar event won by an amatuer player. the fact that any common joe could have a good run one day and make a huge payday makes poker cool. you don't have to be in good shape, have $1000's paid out for equipment. you can play when you want, quit when you want, spend your winnings (we all win right) on what you want. thats the magic of poker.

You bring up a good point, but the NHL still had contracts with the some of the major U.S networks during the lockout. I believe Poker was slid into some of these available slots. ESPN and Fox Sports regularly cover hockey to this day and they too jumped on the Poker bandwagon.
You still saw the NHL on ABC (maybe NBC too) this year.
