Advice and thoughts on this plz

hey everyone,

Im a 14 year old boy with a real big passion for texas holdem, i do really well in play chips in online poker, i usually finish around 5th to 7th plac in a 90 man tournament and im NEVER below second place at sit and go tables(I win 1st place pretty often too). I know people dont take play chips seriously, but it seems that when theres 20 people left in a tournament it gets serious , and i still end up doing well.

At 14 and making these kind of standings, is it anything special and consider myself a really good talented poker player, or is it easy for all of you's to be 1st in a play chip sit and go?
thnx

  • I'm hoping my math symbolizing here is understandable...

    REAL $$ <> PLAY $$

Two totally different kinds of games, with different kinds of players. Don't start thinking you are the next Moneymaker, because you will be in for quite a damaging learning experience.

But...don't let me tell you that you aren't unskilled. You may have the knack for the game naturally, true enough, I don't know. If you do, my best advise for you is study, study, study...and when you are finished that, STUDY MORE! You're 14...you won't even be playing legally for a few years yet. Learn everything you can without sacrificing your education and career path you may choose, and when you're ready to tackle the real games, you'll be better prepared. Oh, you'll get burnt, that's a given, but you just may be ready to accept it better.
  • yes play money is just PLAY money
mainly for the young, the bored and those who can't or do not dare to play with real money
good to pass your time but the danger is u pick up loads of bad habits and when u do go to real games, you'll be in for a big surprise in the long run
better to test your skills amongst your friends and family members even with micro limits
  • My nine year old nephew has played online maybe a dozen times and won over $10k in play money just because he sometimes knows where the fold button is. He can't read a board but he does know a flush is a good hand. If he has pocket 2s and there is AA on the board he gets all excited because he has 2 pr. These are the kind of people you sometimes beat, because he is a winning play money player in sngs too.

You are far better off to buy software like Poker Academy, where the computer players are programmed to beat you. Win tourneys on that software and practice, practice, practice. Beg your mom for $10 on Pokerstars for your 16th birthday and play the 1 cent/2 cent tables as the next step.

You are too young to give up on life and play poker.

Go to college, get a degree....then see if you are good at poker.
  • It's good you are asking the question - it shows some maturity that you aren't simply assuming "I win - I must be great" - kudos to you. I hope you take the above responses (and this one) seriously and consider them with that same maturity.

As has been mentioned, play money is NOT real money, and the play is far different. Moose's advice is bang-on, PokerAcademy would be a far better way to learn without playing for money, and after that micro-limits.

Also, even if the answer is "yes, you are a prodigy", then what? Very few people are winners, and even fewer can make a living at it. Personally I think the odds are better for a skilled young hockey player to make the NHL than for a skilled young poker player to successfully make a living playing, so hopefully that puts it in context. Poker is a fun hobby, and for a select few it is profitable. Even if you are amazingly good at this game, that shouldn't change anything for you as far as any life goals you have.

As far as your record, I can believe it, my son was routinely in the money when he started playing at age 9. However, that sort of record isn't real life. Even the best players can't sustain it, and until you start losing you can't really tell how good you are. Once my son started playing with PokerAcademy and in some real-money games, he still did well and above-average, but not even close to the success he had with play money. And he has no aspirations of going pro - just beating some of his dad's friends ;) .

You're young, so enjoy poker for what it is, a fun game. And maybe try talking to your parents about it...
  • LOL at all of you telling a 14 year old to play for real money.

Perhaps we could coach him on what brand of cigarettes to smoke too.

    Here's my bit:

You are 14. Go outside and play baseball or road hockey with your friends. Go hang somewhere and find a gaggle of girls of your age, talk one of them into playing stink finger with you. You've got the rest of your life to gamble.

    Best advice offered yet!

    Two comments on your advice.

    1. Where was this advice when I was 14.

    2. I bet you don't have a 14 year old daughter.
  • Perhaps I should clarify a few points:

    1. Petting 14 year old girls is ONLY acceptable if done by other 14 year olds.

    2. Hanging out with friends or girls when you are a teen > Poker

Dude micro limit poker is a lot cheaper than smoking cigarettes.
  • ok so i got the point, i guess anyone could finish 8th and 9th at a play chip tourney. Im just going to download the poker academy and crack a serial code for it and then see how good I get.

I think im also going to start playing poker with my friends, make abit of side money and that should also teach me some different types of play styles. Keep the replys coming, lol i was expecting to get this much on this thread so thank you to everyone who has replyed and anyone who will!

Um... I don't think he was trying to say "Hey Kid, Save your money for a better addiction"

It's more like... "Hey, remember.. you're only 14, and there is a reason they have age limits on smoking, drinking, and gambling; it's because they are all potentially life ruining addictions"

No age limit on sex though... so Go For It! Safely. :D

Oh, one more thing... "stink finger"???? :P

Kids gamble from about the age of 6 for marbles, hockey cards, pokemon cards, beyblades, what have you. They put hundreds of dollars into these collections. I don't need to write a 10, 000 word essay on the dangers of gambling and the necessity of proper adult supervision on a poker site. If you are worried about the dude then pm him for his phone number and call his parents yourself or please ask Sloth to put an age restriction on access to the site.

Maybe he'll need the income to support his family after his stinky finger goes too far. Please add your 10, 000 word essay on the necessity of safe sex.

I'm not saying kids won't or don't gamble.

If I have to spell it out for you I will. I'm saying that your responsibility as an adult is not to encourage this type of behavior in other peoples kids. If you want to encourage it in your own kids that is your prerogative and at least in that case you can continue to ask questions and monitor their behavior so that it doesn't get out of control.

If you are really that thick that you can't make sense of that reality there is really no sense in debating this with you.

P.S. I don't know anyone who has gotten a girl pregnant or caught an STD by touching them with their hand. If you need someone to explain to you where babies come from feel free to PM me.
  • I spent about 4 months reading articles etc on-line before I ever started playing. I went to pokerpages.com, cardplayer, and read every article in the archives. I think it's s great head start before you start playing. It makes your learning curve steeper.

I lost my first $50 buy in playing limit, then tried one more $50 buy in but played only SNG's, and never looked back. I was truely shocked at my difference in results between limit and no limit, back when I was finding my style. You have to have the base knowledge though, and playmoney tables won't give it to you.

So to recap, read, read, read, start as low as you can and find your best game (no-limit, limit).
