Rep. Barney Frank held a press conference today introducing his bill to end the prohibition of online gambling. The bill, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007 (IGREA), will be introduced in the House of Representatives today.

I can't believe this took so long. The last bill never should of been passed, hopefully this can undo the problems the last one caused. Hopefully once this is passed Netteller will come back.

If passed as written, the bill won't actually end the prohibition of online gambling. It will serve to regulate it and perhaps tax it and does nothing to lift the ban the IGREA will place on American financial institutions transacting with online gambling sites.

Also, as I understand it, each of the States is free to set their own laws and internet gambling is illegal in many states.

It's better than nothing but even Frank isn't too confident this will pass muster with the House. It may begin more productive discussions though.

I haven't heard anything more about this...does anyone know what the status is of this bill or whether there is any progress? Seems things are either the same or perhaps worse at this point.
