Poker Myth

I'm sure we can all think of many myths regarding poker.

However, there is one myth i have never personally heared discussed, and i as hoping i could present it here

Myth: All poker players make money

It may sound ridiculous, because obviously you need loosers for winners, however, the myth is created it seems b/c EVERYONE and i mean EVERYONE claims to win and "MAKE PROFIT". I have NEVER heared a poker player say.. "I loose money playing poker"

Therefore. my question is..

Do poker players who liee about their profit merely express their addiction to poker? or the fact that they are liars? and why does everyone say they win, when clearly its not true.

Thanks!

  • A lot of people are liars plain and simple.

However, the people that take poker seriously enough to post on a forum and have discussions about the game are generally better players and most likely profitable.
  • That's one good looking sammich Andrew!

...my useless post of the day!

Listen carefully... and take a look http://www.13cards.com/poker
I AM A LOSING PLAYER!!! Those are my stats.

That is why you MUST keep detailed stats, so you cannot lie to yourself or anyone else.
  • Most players tend to "forget" the losses, and "remember" the wins.
Then when they add them all up on their fingers and toes, they are "crushing" the game.

There's a guy at my work who deposits $50 every week, Has NEVER made a withdrawal, yet is a big winner.

Since he refuses to use PokerTracker, I told him to get a pad of paper and a crayon and write down his session totals....

He refuses to do so because he "knows" he wins 90% of his sessions.

Sigh. Why do I even bother sometimes?

he could be telling the truth and still be losing money...

i think some people look at poker as entertainment. if you were going to go out for the night and spend a couple hundred, then what is the diff between that and blowing it in a night of poker?

in addition, some might see tourneys as a kind of lottery.

Why do you not stick with Min-Bet?

    NL is killing you
  • Unfortunately, that cannot be true. One estimate I've read is that 85% of poker players are losers and only 15% break even or win. This makes sense for tournaments where only around 10% make it to the money. It also seems reasonable for raked cash games where the house ends up with a substantial amount of the buy-ins by the end of the night due to rake, tips and other expenses paid for by the players.

Another estimate of the distribution for all poker players is that only 10% are able to beat the rake/tips, with 40% of players having a small loss rate.

  • if you read enough of my post
you did know, i'm losing money now.
but overall i'm break even (chuckieland-allyaisa)
I think this is because, when you have a good run, you make alot of money, and bad run, you lose alot. but for every tournment you took down, you can afford to lose 5 (SNG) or afford to lose 17(45 MTT), or afford to lose 22 (90 MTT)
back in good old day, I have play 25 tourny in one day, took down 20, and the other 5 i am in the money as well.
so, even know i'm lose alot now, but i'm still show a little green.
I am not sure about cash game, because it's not profitable for me.

    Play money on Stars?

    If not, I call BS.

    it's on fulltilt
you can look up chuckieland ( i no longer use that) it's show profit.
i deposite 100 dollar, and made it up to 600 in a month, then the good old days are over. i just start losing it......

I'm not saying you're not profitable. But playing 25 tourneys in one day and winning 20 of those is just not possible... you're probably more likely to win the lottery AND get struck by lightning AND accidentally slip into another dimension in the same day. That's all I was saying.

I concur. And by saying "It's not possible", I think all that he meant is that the probability of the former (20/25 + 5 ITM finishishes consecutively) is probably less than the probability of the latter (Lightning strike, etc.).
However, the people that take poker seriously enough to post on a forum and have discussions about the game are generally better players and most likely profitable.

I agree, however I'd also assume the fact that people who take the game a little more seriously than the average Joe probably have a bigger ego wrt the game as well. Hence I'm sure that claiming to be a "winning player" is of greater importance to the posters here, so they may be more apt to BS, or ignore facts. I'd guess that 85% of the posters here are not winning players.

As previously mentioned record keeping is key, and I'd guess there's probably a reasonable correlation between winning players with those that actively keep accurate records.
  • i have to admitt, I was lucky, my top pair is always good, my AA, KK always double me up, and my draws are always completed.
i have only done it once, it's not a everyday thing.
i only show profit, because of good old days ( $5 tourny days), if i discount them, i much be in red for at least $500 dollar.
kinda made me wonder....when i didn't know that much about poker.
steal blind is news to me
M# is a news to me
always call a raise with any two face card and any A-X
    but i am winning...
now i am aware of all the stuff.
    but i am losing....

    I can relate.

My first bit of playing NL Holdem was always the same. Several buddies $10-$20 Buyin SNG's and I crushed them always. I knew nothing but my aggressive style gave me a huge edge in these games.

I deposited $25 in Stars and ran it up over $300 in a couple of months playing SNG's exclusively. I bet until I found resistance and folded when I did. I would never call. At the levels I played at this was good enough to simply run people over and make money.

When I started to read about the game and "tighten up" I stopped winning and basically just floated my bankroll for about 6 months. During this period I whined a lot about bad beats and felt a lot of frustration.

But I continued to read and learn and adjust. Switching to cash games really helped me learn a ton. SNG's really became too exploitable because of the push botting in the late stages and the fact that most players did not adjust and it wasn't helping me grow as a player

Because I am also a bankroll nit I toiled in $10NL for what seemed like forever. When I finally moved up to 25NL I found a nice surprise waiting for me. I could crush this game. It is still home base for me but I have taken a few shots at $50NL and I know that I have an edge there too.

Enough rambling, here is my point Chuckie. Your progression here is natural. The key to your success is you. Are you ready to stop whining about bad beats? Are you ready to try and make a good decision every time you click your mouse or sit at a table? I think you probably are getting close. You have taken a shit ton of abuse here and keep coming back for more.

That tells me that you really want it. Good luck!

reading this, at least i can see some light at the end of the tunnel.
  • Sorry guys, just wanted to clarify this:
I'd guess that 85% of the posters here are not winning players.

What I MEANT to say is that I doubt 85% of the posters here are winners, NOT 85% of the posters here are losers... :)
