  • Has anybody read this book? Its a great GREAT book

That's sarcasm, right? right? Tell me I'm right.

Kidding aside, there are much better book out there than Phil's, what were your questions?
  • No, I wasn't kidding. I've read quite a number of hold'em books, and not many have spoken about the importance of aggressive betting, virtually regardless of the flop. These strategies have worked for me, and although they aren't knew strategies, i haven't seen them presented this way. Phil Hellmuth is a bit of a whiner, but he's a good player. I am open to suggestions for other interesting reads/authors...............

  • I don't think you will find too much support for Hellmuth's book, but I'm very sure that if you post your conflicting questions on some of his ideas you would get responses. I think a lot of people here have at least read it (including me).

    Post away.
  • I would never say that it is a "bad" book. My general response is that it is a "good" beginner book. I do like the concepts he has about raising preflop with certain hands and continuing to raise to show strength even when your hand misses. It does not however get into anything that is to intricate IMO. If you are looking into buying your girlfriend a book, this one is great for teaching her about your endless habit.

  • Any other books i should check out?

That was my impression of it as well, I gave my copy to my Dad who had never read a poker book before (but still managed to final table the first 2 tournaments he went to with me) and he said he learned quite a bit from it...then he went and bought Doyle's book.

Have you read any of Sklansky's book? Theory of Poker and Hold 'Em for Advanced players are both good...I'm currently reading Tournament Poker for Advanced Players.
  • I would say, with no sarcasm, that Phil H's book is one of the worst poker books I have ever read.

It is especially *bad* for beginners, due to there being so much incorrect low-limit strategy advice (and low-limit generally being the point of entry into poker for beginning players).

The limited value this book might have is really only accessible to players who are already relatively skilled at poker, and are critical thinkers.

  • I've read Phil's book. Didn't like it very much. Too many exclamation marks!!! My g/f bought it for me, and I still check it out every now and again in the bathroom, so if you have any questions about anything in particular I may be able to help.

He gets away with extremely aggresive betting because of his reputation. If the average Joe bets like he does, won't last too long.
  • I have read the book and have had some trouble keeping my bank roll steady. I am hoping that it is just becasue I am taking longer to master the techniques Phil talks about. I am thinking that I will go back to the techniques that I picked up from reading Dave Scharf's book. From my results in which I have kept track - my roll has not fluctuated as much as It did after reading Dave's bookas it is now. ANy thoughts?
  • Check out Killer Poker by Vorhaus, if you want something based on aggressive betting. He also has a similar book for On-line poker. Lee Jones book, Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em is a decent starting point, after which you may be ready for Sklansky's books. His writing style is very dense. By that I mean he crams a lot of info. into a short space. Sklnasky co-wrote a book with someone named Miller which is highly recommended by others. I am waiting for Amazon to deliver mine. I'll let you know what it's like. The Vorhaus books can be found at Indigo or Chapter's in Brampton. If I remember correctly you're from Brampton, right stoneskn?
  • Sorry, the Miller book is called Small Stakes Hold 'Em. My bad . . .
  • THanks for all the contributions guys! I have figured out the passages in the book, so now i'm set!
