Poker on TV

This has been bugging me for... well... the entire time I have been playing poker. Why does anyone care to play poker on TV?!?!?!

Everyone seems to have this fascination with anyone who has played in the WSOP or WPT or any crappy televised poker event. What's the big deal? I personally have absolutely ZERO desire to play poker on TV and I honestly can't see why anyone would care to. I play poker for the social aspect, for the competition, and a bit for money (winning live player... BRAG!). So I'm curious as to what people's motivations are for wanting to play on TV. Is it because you think it's your shot at $$ millions? Is it because you think you might become famous? WHY!?!??!

  • I heard about this poker on TV thing. I guess it is true.

Why do people want to be on TV? Here are the reasons

    1. Famewhore
    2. Hope to score endorsment deals
    3. Show how great they are to all their friends
    4. The women (or the men depending if you are a woman or gay)
    5. Money. WSOP and WPT have pretty damn nice payouts.
    6. Because that's what you are told to strive for.
    7. Proof that you won. Saying you're a winning live player could just be a lie. Liar. Pants on fire. Winning my money doesn't count.
    8. So you can star in some of the worst commericials that Poker Stars has ever made about visiting your old friends and driving a sports car with a really bad haircut.
    9. Respect. They think they'll get it at the tables in casinos.
    10. Small penis.
  • Remember, poker is only on TV because it's popular and marketable.
  • wow, negative. there is huge games being televised, why wouldn't people at the top of their field want to play in them?

If you were Phil Ivey, would you want everyone come gunning for you? After awhile it would get kinda boring...profitable, no doubt...but dull all the same.

Personally, I would think the pros would much prefer to remain as low key as possible.
  • Not all live poker is the same. Personally, I find "High Stakes Poker" very interesting and instructive. The money is at a significant and real level for these players it seems, and they are there for the big cash game... to me, they don't seem to care much about the cameras.

Seeing 1/2 mil. real-cash pots gets the blood moving!
  • I'll bet Gus Hansen gets laid by twice as hot women as he used to, one hundred times more than he used to. Hell I'll bet Daniel Negrano even get's some women that would blow you away. TV is good. Women are good. Fame can be good and bad, but mostly good. Plus TV is where the money is.

    Is this true? .......

I guess I'd like to play poker on TV.

    Yeah, thanks.

But I'm talking about... Why does the average Joe Blow want to play poker on TV so bad?

Sorry about your luck Nik. However, Flint Bones #10 did explain to me why I have no desire at all to play poker on TV :D:D:D

  • I understand, Greg.

More on point, some of the comments here are exactly why they want to play on TV. They think that only people at the top of their game make it on TV. Which you are clearly not at the top of your game and therefore shouldn't be on TV. That with your rather large crotch pickle exclude you.

I know you understand dude, thanks for the great reply before.

Holy crap you're right! I didn't even realize that. That's hilarious.

Whenever anyone mentions poker on TV I always have a little laugh cuz I'm thinking "Haha, Moneymaker, what a donk!".

LOL, I don't even know what to say to that.

  • Exactly when you're playing on tv you're usually playing with the best of the best. I guess its in everyone to want to be the best in their field, and for the poker player it means playing in large tournaments that are televised. Oh and comic reply because you want the money the tourney offers so when youre deep youre gonna be on tv.
  • I think we're underestimating the difficulty of making a final table of a large field/high buy in event. If your reason for playing poker is for fun, then your approach to poker has to be different than these players. There is nothing wrong with playing for fun but to acquire large sums of money and re-invest all their winnings into tournaments where they are consistently pitted against the best players in the world is not an easy feat. The fact of the matter is, the people who make it to these final tables are a special breed of player and personality. I would imagine a lot of time and energy is spent playing side/cash games by these players to acquire these tournament buy-ins.
