Blue Water Trip Report

Bluewater Classic Poker Tourney $100 buy-in freezeout

Drove through some nasty weather to this event on Monday.

Point Edward is a small casino with almost a family like feel. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The tournament was well run. I would play here often if they spread NL cash games but as of now charity casino’s can not.

The play at the table I was at was as weak tight as I have ever seen. Other than myself there was two players at the table capable of firing more than one bullet post flop unless holding the stone cold nuts. This table was a great opportunity!

Seat 1 was a 60ish lady. Nitsville

Seat 2 30ish guy. Fairly solid player with a good understanding of position. Went on a serious heater through levels 3 and 4 and built a massive stack while knocking out the first 3 players at the table.

Seat 3 Another 60ish guy. Nit.

Seat 4 30ish guy said he was from Ottawa and was pretty loud and talkative. Really loose player but only semi-aggressive. Welcome to my immediate right sir!

Seat 5 Hero.

Seat 6 Yet another 60ish dude. Nit. Noticing the trend yet?

Seat 7 Another old guy and kind to dirty to boot. Lots of gamble and low skills. When he got involved in a hand he had a hard time letting go. His aggression won him a fair number of medium sized pots. I was really hoping to get a hand against this guy.

Seat 8 30ish guy talked to him after and said he was from Detroit. Tight. Predictable.

Seat 9 The last retiree at the table and probably the best of all the geriatrics. Aggressive from position but also knew when to get away from a hand.

Seat 10 Young TAG. Didn’t play a lot of pots but when involved was aggressive. Best to stay away from this guy.

Level 1 Stacks $5000
$25-$50

They were very cautious with a lot of open limping. I stole some pots early and had only one memorable hand.

4 to the flop and I call from SB with a 3-6 spades. Flop is 4 5 3 rainbow. Nit Lady in Seat 1 bets half the pot, 1 player calls and so do I. Turn is a 2. I check, and she bets $400. Seat 2 folds and I check raise for $1000 more. She calls. River is a brick. I bet $1500, she calls and shows 66 for the same straight. Chop chop.

Level 2 My Stack $6000ish
$50-$100

Yo-yo’d up and down a bit as I decided to see some flops with this crowd while we were all still fairly deep. Raised to $1000 with 3 limpers on my BB holding AK. Everyone folds. Raised up KK and get no callers. Blah. No other hands really come to mind.

Level 3 My Stack $6000ish
$75-$150

No much here. Raked a small pot. Couple of steals.

Level 4 My Stack $7000ish
$100-$200 $25 Ante

Wow. How’d we get here so fast?
I wanted to take advantage of the weak table and the ante’s arriving so quickly. I started to raise a lot of pots pre-flop. Nobody seemed to make the adjustment and I took many down without a fight. I had to make change on the 2nd hand of the level because I was out of $25 chips. By the time the level finished I had almost $3000 worth of green $25s in front of me. Robbery is fun!!!

I showed down one hand at this level. 4 Limpers on my BB and I check. Monotone flop checks around. Everyone checks the turn. River is an A and everyone checks again. I tell the table, “I have King high.” All four muck and I rake a $1000 pot.

Younger guy in Seat 2 busts old Nit who was short stacked in Seat 3 and other old nit in Seat 6 and then old grubby gambler in seat 7 who had about $5000 in front on this hand:

Gambler raises to $600 from UTG +2. Seat 2 calls from Cut off. Flop is J-7-6 rainbow. Grubby gambler fires $2000 and gets called. Turn is an 9 and the old guy insta shoves his last $2500 in the middle. Young guy goes in the tank for like 3 minutes and finally says, “I put you on a draw and you may have just got there but I don’t think I can lay this down.” He calls and shows 77 for a flopped set. The old guy turns over AQ off and is drawing dead. Wow, you suxors. Please take a bath.

His statement confused me. Did he really think this guy raised from EP holding 10-8?

Level 5 My Stack is $12000ish
$200-$400 $25 Ante

I make a stupid re-raise over the solid player in Seat 10 while I hold KQ suited in the cut-off. He calls and then pots it OOP after I miss the flop and there is none of my suit. I fold. Shit! I should have called and saved myself $2000.

I bust the guy from Ottawa in Seat 4 a few hands later. He lost most of his stack after he flopped a straight and got all-in on the turn with the old Nit Lady who picked up a flush draw. She rivers him and he drops a few F-bombs and is left with about $1500.

So he limps into my BB after it folds around and I check 9-5dd. The flop comes Q 10 5 two diamonds. He insta-shoves his last $1000 and I call with my 10 outer getting 2-1 on my money. Turn bricks but river is a lovely Ad and he explodes. “Fuck, fuck, sucked out on everytime!” He was a friendly enough guy so I just said, “sorry dude” and shrugged. He shook my hand and stomped off. (Note: Why didn’t he push pre-flop?)

Then this hand happens. New player in seat 3 is young aggressive guy who has been at the table for about 4 orbits. He is aggressive and has been firing at a lot of pots.

Seat 4 is still empty and it folds around to New Young Guy in SB. He has about $8500 behind (I have about $10,000) he raises to $1200 and I call with Ks 10c from BB. Flop is K 10 2 two hearts. He bets $2000. I tank for about a minute and call hoping he puts me on a flush draw that never comes. Turn is Kd. Bonzaii!! He checks and I check behind hoping he will take a stab on the river or call my push. River is 2 of clubs. He immediately announces “All-In.” and I beat him into the pot. He flips 22 for quads. ZOMG live poker is soooo rigged.

In hindsight he wasn’t laying down 2’s full of Kings on the turn if I put him all-in so I was dinked anyway you look at it. Sick beat but at least I am still alive even though my $1500 is an M of 1.5!

It folds to me in the CO 3 hands later and I push with rags cause I get down like that, no one calls. I didn’t remind the BB that the pot was laying him 3-1. It worked so good I do it again the next hand and rake the pot uncontested. Wow!

I keep this nonsense up and get back to about $7000 on a pure steal fest when I raise from mid position with AJ offsuit. Guy to my left tanks for a minute and pushes. He has me covered. It folds back to me and I start thinking I am probably behind everything he makes this move with. I lean right into him and ask him if he has a pair. He’s got this nervous tic where his head snaps forward an inch or two every few seconds, like chicken. He’s got a pretty big beak too. I notice that said tic gets worse when the heat is on so just keep staring and ask him again if he’s making a move on me. I fold my AJ face up and the whole table is sooooo impressed with my fold. One guy even saying, “Now that is a great fold right there.” LOL. I point out that I am not raising light so be carefull coming over the top of me. The guy later told me he had Queens.

Level 6 My stack is $5000ish
$300-$600 $50 Ante

I pay the blinds once and then push with Ac 10c over a raise from the loosest player at the table. He calls with 99. I get and A on the flop and he turns another 9. Good night!

All in all I was happy with my play. I adjusted well to the structure and stole and small balled my way through an insanely tight table. The only big pot I lost was a pretty sick beat. If he didn’t catch his only out on the river I would have been in the top 5 after that hand.

Dealers were extremely quick and friendly and it was a solid tourney. I would have preferred a $100-$200 level with no ante in there but it was still great value for a $100 buy-in.

  • Can you comment on what kind of cash game action was taking place at the casino during your visit?

Limits, how many tables, wait list, during what time, etc...

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

One table, fixed limit, Me thinks it was 5-10 but I could be wrong.

Most of the regulars were in the tourney me thinks.

I don't get it, unless the river is a 3, how do you guys have the same straight?

LOL My bad. Flop was 453 not 459.
  • Thanks for the report. I know a couple of people that bought in for the Blue Water Classic and wanted to play myself, but it is just too much of a pain driving all the way there. Having done a 180° turn, sliding into a highway rail, and getting stuck in deep snow a couple of times with my car the past couple of weeks, I think I'll stick to Brantford and Fallsview Casino as the furthest casino tournaments I'm willing to drive to.

I sure hope there's a lot more then 5-10 going later on during the week. Does anyone know if they at least have a regular 20-40/30-60?

I guess there's no chance for a 50-100 game then?????????
  • I don't live in Sarnia anymore, but I can tell you what things were like when I lived there.

The regular nightly game was 5-10 hold em. It's a little tighter than Brantford, but the players are the same guys everynight, and were not too skilled for the most part(I'm not too skilled for the most part, so whatever).
They were just starting to spread Omaha, and Omaha 8 when I was there last. The Omaha high game was one of the loosest things I've ever seen, and if you can catch some cards, you can get rich playing that.

3/6 hold em is offered on the weekends, sometimes, and sometimes, there is a 10/20 game, and even more rarely, a 20/40 game. The players in the 10/20 and 20/40 are generally the same as the 5/10 guys, but they think they look cooler. There are a few sharp players in that group though.

Sarnia is a strange place. It's a small pond, and there's lots of kids who want to be the big fish. Lots of americans as well.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks Dinobot,

I actually gave the poker room a call and they indicated that since it's tournament time they expect to have 30-60 and a 40-80 going.

But judging by what you've told me I think they might be pushing their luck. I guess I'll be lucky if they've got 20-40.

Will be heading there late tonight/tommorow morning.

    Thanks again.
  • Great report, loved every second of it.

  • Arrived at Point Edward last night - the action is DEAD with a capitol D.

One 10-20 which was 6-8 handed. that's it....
There was some jerk that ran his mouth at me and wanted to play me heads up 50-100. I immediately said yes and the loser backed out and went to play blackjack - the locals told me he owns a strip club in town.

Drove 3.5 hrs to play 10-20??????, good thing I brought my laptop and the holiday inn has wireless internet so I can do some multi-tabling on stars or fulltilt.
