From dead to first in 16 hands

I know comebacks like this have been posted in the past, I thought some of you might enjoy this one. Better to be lucky and good I say! Starts at the bottom with me only having 70 chips and the blinds 200/400 25ante. I've omitted some folds.

  • Typical of how I would expect you to do this well...

J/k - well done - oh and J4 is my favourite hand. Well until I realized how easily two pair being counterfeited can cost you your whole stack. Now I prefer J3 - It has never cost me more than my BB.
  • Lol, yes see signature below. That was the 2nd of back to back wins at that level, of course I was a tad luckier on this one to come back from the dead :)

  • My fave is calling for the 222222 and getting it. gg

  • LUCKBOX, i did something like this in FTOPS event 1 with 225 chips left and the 250-500 level.
  • I don't understand hand 16. Every player on that table should have limped the big blind and checked it down.

I actually kind of like this hand. I know why everyone will say it's dumb, but IMO, it's not that bad. I'll leave it up to somebody else to explain why.

Does ANYONE else like villain's play here? Cause I do. Maybe high variance, but with a reasonable read, I think it's easily +EV.

Yes, I like it, especially if your opponent has shown a little bit of knowledge on tournament strategy. The question is did Pedro understand he was making a good play?
  • How is that even possibly a good play?

-he GREATLY, GREATLY lessened the chance that the short stack would be eliminated

-no one calls? he has maybe a 15-40% chance of winning a few chips

-he gets called? he is losing all of his money 80% of the time

In fact, I think this is the most donkish play I have ever seen from someone deep in a real money tournament. Am I missing something here??
  • I'm not sure about it either, I think it's a donk call. Perhaps we can talk about it tommorow at the Royal.

    stp
  • Am I missing something here??

Hint: Ignore the main pot (villian is).
  • He made a great play to win the 1100+ side pot.

Who is the real idiot for not realizing that? Yes its all about eliminating people, but if he can pick up an 1100 side pot, who cares about the 200 main? Its also about getting chips whenever you can.
  • I don't agree with the play. I think poker is about making profit based decisions and this wasn't one of them. Sure there is a strong correlation between more chips and winning but in this particular play he is gambling all of this stack with the worst hand in poker against a player who is on the bubble. He doesn't need to gamble this much to win the hand or the tournament. If I can come back from 70TC then anyone can, he could have easily been called and lost his $27 entry. In the long run I think it's a loosing play.

    stp
  • He wasn't gambling against the smaller stack, he was gambling against the other stacks at the table that they wouldn't call his all in. Then if you all fold, going against the small stack is irrelevant to him for only 215 chips vs the 1190 side pot he just stole.

Either way the short stack is still the short stack.
  • Hmm, didn't notice the side pot was quite that big. I can see the justification for that move, but I still don't like it in the context.
  • Ok, so which of you guys would make this move with that hand in that situation?

    *keeping notes lol....

    seriously though.

  • stpboy wrote: »

Against you, I would. Not a shot against you, but you are a decent player. I can't see you limping in there with a big hand first to act, so I doubt you'd call. For the few times you actually do call, it's still a profitable play.

Against an unknown or less skilled player, I just fold.
  • The other neat part of this hand is, if Pedro loses it to the short stack, not only has he still gained money, but he's prevented the bursting of the money bubble (I'm assuming this is a STT), which will have the effect of keeping stp and Funky playing tight because there's a micro-stack on the bubble and Pedro can bust either two.

That's an excellent point, one I really didn't consider. I'll need to let this percolate for awhile me thinks.
