Donkey Play or just Unlucky?

Ok... for some reason this hand I was involved with last night is still playing on my mind. What I want to know is Did I do something "redonkulous" or did Villian just get lucky

This is not a bad beat story..I was outplayed..I just want to know if I was out of line with my play.

Live Tourney...blinds are 50/100 6 handed at my table, I'm seated in the cutoff position

I have about 2100 in chips
Button is short stacked...around 800
SB [Villian in our story]...has around 2250

Only real solid read I have on the SB is that he's a pretty loose player...overvalues any pair [in this game I've seen him call river bets with mid pair, no pair Ace high, top pair - rag]
Dealt to me QQ
Folded to me...I make it 300 to go [3 x bb raise...pretty standard play I think]
Button Folds
SB calls [again I've seen this guy call raises with a large range of hands...even as low as suited 5 8, but at this point I feel he's holding A rag]
BB Folds
Flop [Q 8 A rainbow][I don't remember the suits, but a flush is never a factor on the board]
Good flop for me.. Set of Queens, not too dangerous looking board and very tempting for anyone holding an ace [which I thought Villian had]
Vil. Checks [hmmmmm Now I don't think he has an ace and now I'm kinda lost as to what he has, I was really expecting a bet from him here]
I check [in hindsight slowplaying was the wrong play here, you'll see in a min...but pls..your opinion]
Turn [ J ]
Vil Bets 600 [i'm now thinking he's either got J anything or a pair of jacks in the hole and just made a pair, 2 pair or his set...so I'm still good]I push all in for my remaining 1800
He Calls Flipping over K T o [Nut Straight...well knock me down with a feather..did not put him on that hand]
I have outs but no help comes to boat me up on the river

What I want to know is did I make the right play here or did I totally donk this up not betting on the Flop?

There are a lot of excellent poker players on this forum that dwarf my skills at the table, so any opinions/beratings/pats on the back would be appreciated

  • I think you just got unlucky.

I would have played it the same way. He easily could have had two pair.
  • I don't like the flop free card, especially if you think the opponent's bad and may have an ace. I don't think you want to blow him out but you might as well start building your pot with your set. Rainbow flops are nice, but any KJT9 could potentially make a straight, and loose players are apt to be playing broadway hands. I think you want to charge gutshots and bad aces here.

The only argument I can see for checking is if you think he's the type compelled to bluff big at pots if you show weakness. If he isn't a bluffer, and doesn't have an ace, you're going to be hardpressed to get much more out of him unless he turns a straight or less likely 2 pair (I say less likely because for him to turn 2 pair without an ace he has to have 8x as he's very unlikely to hold the case Q).

You got unlucky, but you don't need to slowplay flops like that against bad players.
  • bet the flop. you win a small pot (maybe...) vs risking losing a much bigger one. he may have called anyway so it is conceivable you would have had the same result.

you still had outs to win it when you pushed so it wasn't the most terrible play ever.
  • Appreciate the opinions...thanks guys

After the hand the dude said that if I had bet the flop he would have folded...I'm not so sure...I think that it was inevitable that I was leaving on that hand...Oh well....as already stated... Thats Poker

So true... But I think you could not off got off the hand and he got lucky. Ive realized slow playing most of the time only causes trouble so next time put out a raise the minumum or something at least make sure he has to have something. Try to get a read when he calls. When I have a big hand now, I always raise. If he folds at least you gained something instead of going bust because you let him see a few to many cards
