Salutations, Greetings and um...hi

Just want to say hi, been a lurker here for awhile and have just officially signed up. I live about an hour west of Ottawa so my live playing opportunities are pretty limited. Still hoping that The Hull Casino will get a poker room some time soon. but my correspondence with them says that will be some time yet, as there has to be a change in the Quebec liquor and gambling regulations for that to happen.
I play a great deal online, 2-4, 3-6 limit mostly but am looking forward to a foray into live play very soon. This site has been most beneficial in my scouting efforts for that. I had it narrowed down to Casinorama and GBH but I see that GBH runs limits a little above my bankroll so Casinorama it will be. I am hoping this weekend to give it a shot.
Thanks again to everyone for the informative posts that I have been reading the last few months.

  • How far are you from the 1000 Islands casino in Gananoque? They've got 4 tables, usually running 3/6, 4/8, 6/12, and 10/20. And they're full'o'fish :D

  • Hi g2
The thousands Island Casino would be the closest for me and on the best roads as well for driving. There are games running most of the time? Just I never heard the casino mentioned much just a few posts that it was hard to get a game there. But if they have something going most of the time it would be ideal for me.
  • The few Friday/Saturday nights I have been there the lists have been long. If you don't get there by 5/5:30pm you're looking at a 2hr+ wait, the lower the limit the shorter the wait.

I've asked the crew about weeknights and they say it's hit/miss. Sometimes packed, sometimes only 2 tables running.

  • Just completed my first live poker foray this weekend. After everything I decided to go to the Thousand Islands Casino in Ganocque. It's a shorter drive for me on better roads. The main drawback is no buffet there. Big disappointment as unlimited access to a spread of various types of foodstuffs ranks pretty even with my passion for Poker. Otherwise, it seems a nice enough place, a small poker area, just offering 4 tables and by the time I got there around 11 a.m on a Saturday, (3 hour drive for me) the waiting list was already significant, particularly in 3-6, so I found myself an hour or so later entering a 4-8 table. This is the highest limit I have ever played including online and I was nervous enough playing live for the first time. I bought in for 200 and waited to post the blind after the blinds passed.
I promptly won my first hand after seeing the non raised flop with k-10 and flopping the k high straight on the flop. Nice start and I already felt better. The hardest thing for me was keeping my concentration on the game at hand being distracted by the televisions, casino noises and the people around me. Once the husband of the charming young lady seated to my left departed our table for the 6-12 I found myself in a couple of mildly flirtatious conversations when I should have been observing the playing habits of those around me. I missed out on several pots with an ace paired because I mistook the agression of a couple players as meaning they actually had what the scary board( paired board or three suited) offered as opposed to wishful thinking with their mid pair. I almost missed another pot when the dealer did not realize that my 8, 9 suited had made two pair beating the two jacks she started to award the pile to. Another couple players were on it even before I could say anything and the supervisor quickly got it straightened out.
After an hour and half my usual limit for playing online before taking a break I was up around 40 dollars and normally I would have stopped then but when you have driven 3 hours to play it just doesn't make sense to quit then with the waiting list to return to a table sitting at around two hours. So, after a few more hours when it was time to go, I found myself down 25, having missed those above mentioned paired aces pots. But, I still enjoyed the experience and definitely will try it again. Perhaps Casinorama this time, if just merely for the buffet.
