Comments

  • no legal way

    but damn profitable
  • watch out, its illegal....buuuut I won't tell
  • There *might* be a legal way, but it could no be privately owned by you. Rather, you would have to have partners (charity/exhibition/first nation) and even then it would be VERY difficult.
  • Dave
Say I wanted to start a Poker Room, since there would be no slots etc. do you know if I would need the same licence as a casino or are there different types of licences for certain applications.....just curious?
  • You need a gaming license. I don' think there are different ones per se. But, I can't imagine a private "for profit" operator being granted a license by a provincial regulator.
  • I am hopeful that the October issue of CPP will contain an article about this from our legal beagle Tom Buglas.
  • I have no legal background or anything, but wouldn't it be possible to start up a charity casino/cardroom and then make money by paying yourself a salary?
  • Charity casinos etc would still require a liscence. Therein lies the rub.
  • that would be so cool...just poker.great idea even if hard to pull off :)

what about a private club that charges membership? no rake just a monthly or annual membership?
  • No good. That would be a gaming house without a doubt.
  • u mean partner ... can it be .. .me and a couple of guys all chiped in to open a card room
that way ... i don't own 100% of the card room ... and there will be 2 people or more people hold most of the share of the company
say ... 40% each for the top to owner me and some toehr ... then the rest of the 20% will be share holders ... people that invest in the cardroom so they have like 5-10% of the cardroom

    would that work

that way it's like openning up a store or a company with different share holder of the company
is this allow ... because in the tv series The Casino ... Tom and Tim bought the golden nuggets and they have their closer friend to put in charge of things like marketing and stuff ... but tom and tim owns 50% each i think

The states have different regulations then we do.
  • The problem is that in Canada, unless you are lisenced you are committing a crime. So, you must get a lisence. YOu and two friends will NOT get such a lisence I am afraid.
  • don't we just have to pay the yearly cost to obtain the liences?? or is there other things we need to go thru??
  • It's not a "business license" it's a gaming license. I doubt you can get one.
  • If you're trying to make money for yourself... forget it!!

If you're in it for the poker... you could try something like this...
    www.metropokerclub.com

I'm not positive... but something like this would be ok in Canada... there is no profit involved.
  • I was talking to someone in Ottawa who is in the process of trying to open a private poker club, with yearly membership dues. He has hired a lawyer to work with him, and according to him, he does believe it's possible. Of course I didn't get every detail, and it's still in the beginning stages, but if you're serious about this sort of venture, you should definitely have some legal consultation.

And 'Mickey' thanks for the web site. I just sent in my membership information.
  • I actually think you may be able to succeed with one approach. It would invovle setting it up as a co-op. The main risk is one of control, since in theory you could lose control. You charge no rake but have members who buy-in to the coop itself. They obviously could be bring guests along, but again no rake could be derived.

The problem is for a guy trying to make money, the model doesn't work well.
