I've gotta say Negreanu, both players are excellent players and are good at what they do, but I think Negreanu is a much more colorful player, and is more exciting to watch. DN is on every poker show these days, and he is for a reason, he's a brilliant player , an excellent Poker writer and commentator.
You hear so many "Phil Ivey is the best player in the world" opinions it's insane. From what I have seen of him, he's an exceptional player, but I really don't think I'm qualified to judge... I've seen a lot more of Negreanu.
If I had to pick between the two, I would say that Ivey is slightly more skilled but Negreanu is by far a more interesting personality.
My personal favorite player would have to be Hellmuth. What can I say, I like controversy. Besides, not only is he a riot to watch, he might just be the best NLHE Tourney player in the world (youngest player to ever win 10 wsop bracelets and, unlike Chan and Doyle, all are in Holdem).
If anything I typed didn't make sense, it's because it's 4 in the morning and I'm having trouble stringing sentences together. :P
I doubt I'll get a lot of support on this, but I think the best player in the world right now would be Greg Raymer. Ever? I'd go with Stuey Unger. That guy made some incredible reads.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you. There's no denying that Raymer is good. But why do you think Raymer is the best? Just wondering about your reasoning.

Raymer is obviously a great player, but I don't think he's in Ivey's or Negreanu's league....but I do think he's the best WSOP champ since Moneymaker!
I would disagree, I would say Hachem is the best WSOP player since Moneymaker. He has had some pretty impressive results since then.
But between the two I would say Ivey. Ivey is part of the corporation and plays (and wins) in the biggest game but you never hear about Negreanu in that game.
Did you see Poker After Dark last week or also known as the Phil Ivey show?
I can't wait to see how Ivey does on High Stakes Poker this season.

Absolutely. I've heard of Hachem making numerous FTs since his ME win. No question that Raymer is a great tourney player, but Hachem's results since the WSOP speak for themselves. I personally haven't heard much from Raymer since his ME win.
DN is fun to watch and is great for the game. There is no doubt that he is one of the top players in the game. He likes to play a ton of tourneys and final table tons because that face time adds $ to his image. His motivations are clearly different than Phil Ivey.
DN is selling himself, his books, his video game, his poker site (FCP), and anything else that he can hock for a buck. This is simply the road he has chosen for himself. He is great at poker but is branching out.
Ivey is selling nothing. He does not want play a ton of TV tourneys (where people can study his style via hole card cams), he does not write articles, books or blogs, to talk about his style. He wants to keep you guessing and play high stakes cash games where he can and will take your money.
They are both great but it’s like comparing an apple to an orange.
Personally I think Ivey is the best cash game player in the world and DN is the best tourney player.
Well...he did win the WPT Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic last month and Raymer been fairly quiet since making it pretty deep in the WSOP main event in 2005 after his 2004 win.
I agree with Ivey having the edge over Negreanu...although Negreanu is the better promoter/ spokesperson.
Check this out....Ivey's got some serious balls! Don't try this at home!

I agree somewhat. I havent seen much of Ivey on tv, but I think that if you can let everyone see your game and how you play and STILL be winning and beating everyone, THAT makes you great.
I still want to see Ivey and Negreanu on high stakes poker the year.
Hachem is the best ME winner since Moneymaker, sure he's affiliated w/Pokerstars which I think takes away from his commenadability, he is a solid player and who knows where he'll be further down the line? Hellmuth watch ur back.

Hmmm ... I like both. Seems the concensus is Ivey is the better cash game player (mostly from what you hear the pros say who play in the big game). Tournaments - I think its close.
The thing with Ivey is, he seems to have this aura about him. Almost a savant thing going, with the poker face and darting eyes and everything. I think he brings some big time intimidation factor with him. I suppose you could say the same thing with all the name pros, but there's something special about Ivey.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to seeing Ivey play on High Stakes Poker this season.
Interesting posts frome veryone on who and why, but I like FunkyMonkey's on paraphrasing down to who's better at which game. I'd like to extend that a little and say that I would never want to make a final table with Negreanu as his ability to be colourful would definitely get me in trouble...
That said, I know I would be completely crushed by Ivey in heads-up with his ability to play so cold and read others.
I don't know if there's been a time that these two have faced off in a heads-up? Does anyone know and if so does anyone know which video it may be on?

I think Hellmuth is credible but not my favourite, I only said that cuz he has 10 freakin bracelets and Hachem hasn't played as long as Hellmuth and Hachem has a lot of potential to move mountains in the business. Negreanu has posted in his blog b4 about hands against Ivey, but Negreanu knows Ivey is good so he proabably tries to avoid pots against him and tries to target weaker players.
But between the two I would say Ivey. Ivey is part of the corporation and plays (and wins) in the biggest game but you never hear about Negreanu in that game.
The corporation is a bunch of players who pooled their money together to play Andy Beal. Negreanu was asked but turned down being part of the corporation because he said if he was going to lay money down it was going to be his and only his...he did not want to gamble with someone elses bankroll
Phil Ivey all day. Nobody can control a game like Phil Ivey. I've seen Daniel get tossed around in HSP. Daniel has some tells that he tends to give away.
I'd like to see Ivey and Hansen go at it. I think they did on Poker Superstars III or II, but unfortunately I missed it.
It was a great play by Yukon. The way he played the hand, it made it look like he had a small pair which flopped a set or top two/straight/OESD/FD when he called PF with suited connectors. Or it could've been any other scenerio that I cannot understand at all, but Brad Booth did setup the hand well.

It sure was brilliant! I also think the intimidating three bricks of cash had to do with it.....to make the great Ivey fold a monster is priceless!
