Favourite Unusual Poker Game

Just out of shear curiousity what is everyone's favourite less mainstream poker game? (something besides 7 card stud (H/L), or Omaha (H/L)) I'm talking about either taking traditional structures and mixing it up w/wilds or different draws or any completely new form that is fun.
My favourites are:
5 card, draw 1, down the river
same pre-draw betting structure as 5 card except the max draw is 1, and down the river is laying out ur cards and showing one at a time until hands are completely shown, or the aggresor takes down the pot (best cards shown bet 1st on all streets), a very deceiving game, it puts more skill into 5 card cuz on traditional 5 card u can judge ur opponents strength on how many cards he takes, so 1 limits that a lot, and pairs become a lot stronger too.

Chicago hold'em or stud:
High spade gets 1/2 the pot (which you all probably know). I like it cuz there's nothin' sweeter than seein the Ace of Spades and ending up w/a multi-way pot

Irish Hold'em:
get 4 cards PF, and toss 2 after the flop is seen before any betting happens. Good action game and takes away the re-draw factor that Omaha has.

Queens & Followers (follow the Queen)
Its stud where on the board whoever gets the Queen, gets a wild and the following card is wild too, unless another Queens happens on later streets, then that card becomes the new wild (another you all know, but just in case sum ppl don't)

The most dreaded in my opinion is 3-3-3
5 card draw 3, 3s wild and min.3 of a kind to open, if noone opens, reante
and one person needs 2 wins to win the pot, a very erratic game, yet good fish food to give them a big stack.

  • A game we play sometimes is called "Kings and Low-in-the-Hole", which is dealt as a 7 card stud type game. All kings are wild as well as your lowest down card. Kings on board cost a player something (depends on stakes) which is added to the pot. Your last card, which is normally dealt facedown can be dealt face-up (to prevent ruining your low wild card(s)) at some cost (again depends on stakes). Best 5 card hand wins from there.
  • I have always wanted to host a night of dealer calls...and this brings back that desire.

In some ways I am disappointed that Texas became so mainstream that it took over many of the alternatives games that exist. When I was in highschool we played at least once a month with .25 or .50 antes and you could essentially call whatever game you like.

My all time favourite was likely 7 card blind baseball (progressive or simultaneous) (with or without Low Chicago).

7 cards to each player face down. Flip one at a time - either til you can beat the person beside you or simultaneously, depending on the variation.

3s and 9s are wild. A 4 gives you the option of purchasing another card for the price of the ante (or some multiple of the price of the ante as decided by the dealer when the game is called).

Great game - generally creates large pots.

So, we should have a dealer calls night soon!! However, I do appreciate that Texas puts everyone on the same page - as far as basic knowledge.

So I would suggest picking from 10-15 pre-approved variatons....
  • Pennsylvania Cut-for-it featuring mulligans and rebuys.
  • fiery cross is always a good pot builder. I have always like any stud game featuring Chicago. I found out in these friendly home games check raising is a big no no......LOL
  • I don't think I've heard of fiery cross before. Another amusing variation is Detroit (low spade in the hole) great to play when ur cards are running shitty cuz generally most the hands u get are low and maybe it's the boost of confidence u need when u do get something big (yes, yes I know each hand is different than the last, etc.)
  • Although i've never actually played it for cash I'd say Guts.
