High Stakes Poker Hand Daniel Alaei vs. William Chen

Now here is a high stakes poker hand. I don't know the exact amounts but here is the break down of the hand and a rough guess on the amounts. I am just wondering your thoughts.

Daniel Alaei is early to mid position, he has pocket 5's, he makes to 3,000 to go (blind 300-600 with 100 antes). (Not sure if some one else raised it first and he called or not)

He gets called by Jamie Gold.

William Chen (I think he is in the SB) makes it 9,000 to go both Gold and Alaei call.

Pot is about 30,000.

Flop is 3x, 4s, 6s. William Chen bets 15,000 and Gold then folds.

Now with out knowing William Chen's cards what do you do if you are Daniel Alaei?

He has to call 15,000 into a pot that is now approx. 45,000. Alaei does have the 5s and there is no one else to act after him.

since i have open end draw, and my 5's maybe good. had 10 outs while puting 15000 into 45000 offer 3:1 pot odds. so odds is good.
william prob on a probe bet with high PP, and see if anybody has a hand, that he can push all-in, or probe bet with nothing.
william has nothing, he would fold to the raise, if he has PP, he would push all-in, and I just have 5's plus a draw....
so raise here would let you know if you are beat or not.
I would just call to see if i can complete my straight on the turn.
  • You guys have to remember that it's really early. I think everyone is getting a feel of everyone's play. Last 2 seasons were good, because everyone had played with eachother before.

I think a raise would be fine in this position and a flop like that "semi bluff"
but I get the feeling everyone is playing scared. No more prop bets this season to overcome the swings.
  • how do their prop bets work n e way? what do they bet on flops or player's actions or what?
  • yes, early play. plus chen re-raised pre-flop. he could very easily have been playing a higher PP. add in the talk during the hand and alaei convinced himself he was behind. gabe made a big deal of it but i don't think there's any shame in folding here - i doubt there were any implied odds if the 4th card to complete his straight came.
  • Yeah I was very surprised Alaei folded here. The way Chen was talking during the hand though he certainly seemed strong, and the cards that make Alaei's hand are all obvious scare card to Chen so he might not be able to count on making that much of he hits, but I'd still go ahead and at least peel one here getting 3:1. Moving in on a bluff is also a good option against players capable of folding big overpairs occasionally, but I guess he decided Chen wasn't likely enough to fold in this case.

Chen could be on A-K or A-Q and making a continuation bet and a nice re-raise would take it down, if Chen has a high pocket then Alaei has a lot of outs. It was just a weird fold to me when you are getting 3 to 1 on your money, plus being a cash game you could gamble here and then think about re-buying.

When he called with pocket 5's I would think this is the kind of flop he would be looking for (besides the obvious hitting a 5 on the flop)
