Another Fekkin Vegas post

I know there is a million, but I am wondering how to have the best Vegas experience on a shoestring.

I am working a lot over the holidays. For example, I worked 16 hours Christmas day, 16 Boxing day, and will do 14 on New Years day, in addition to regular shifts. All said and done, I will work 100 hours in this pay period, and many of them will be at double and even triple time. The union sucks most days of the year, but they gets me paid come the holidays.

Now, I know the government is going to take a nice chunk, but I should still have a nice cheque when I am done. I was hoping to take a few days off, and make my first Vegas excursion. I don't have a ton of money, and will be seeking out the cheapest package possible. Basically, I want to have as much poker playing money as possible, and am willing to eat terribly, and live a meager existence in the meantime.

Haddon, feel free to fill me in here, seeing as how you lived there(possibly).

So cheap restaurants with passable food, which casino's have the best, and free(est) booze, recommended hotels, on the safer end of filthy. You get the idea I hope.

Cheers

All booze is free as long as your playing. It's been over 20 years since I"ve been to vegas so I can't help you much. But I have found you can always find cheap buffets and other things to do. I found a cheap hotel to stay at (which is long gone) and stayed for almost a month when I went. I would recommend looking through hotel web sites and expedia and travelworm. When previously looking at going you can see large differences between them. From what I recall the Sahara comes up as one of the cheaper places to stay. I'm sure others can fill you in more.
  • i just got these offers from WestJet vacations(flights/hotel) to Vegas which to me are good deals if you are willing to start on Mondays and come back on Thur/Fri..Different range of hotels offered. from $698 for 4 nights etc
Much better tham some others packages I have tried...
  • Go during the week. Every hotel room is much more expensive on the weekends. Exalibur has some wicked deals right now, you can call them to get more info.

I stayed at a backpacking hostel for the first three months and then got an apartment. So as for lodging I don't know that much, other than downtown is cheap. Binion's rooms are decent, I stayed there when I got to Vegas. They also have The Ultimate Poker Challenge or whatever right now, which is a TV tourny...pretty good structure, it runs for a year so I have not played it yet.

Main Street Station, also downtown, has an amazing buffet. However, most rooms have some sort of comping deal for players. I know Binion's gives you $2 an hour for live play. Although Binion's does not have a buffet they have a great steakhouse. The Golden Nugget just re did their buffet, its delicious and cheap.

If you have the roll MGM also has a comping deal I believe and their 2/5NL is so beatable. I never got a players card anywhere because you have to show ID and I didn't want an issue.

    Tourney's...NLHE.

Sahara. Every night at 7PM they have over 200 people for this tourny. It is $40 + $2. And a $20 rebuy. You can also buy your seat back for the first hour if you bust right out. First is always over 2200. They have like 120 people or so play the 11PM...the 7PM is usually final table by then.

Plaza. $30+$5 SNG's. 10 people. 1000 in chips. 1st 225, 2nd 75. Very beatable. Play as if you are in the danger zone the whole game. You will end up chopping heads up for 150 each 4/5 times.

Binion's. 10AM, 2PM, 8PM, 2AM. $70 tourny, opt $40 rebuy. 10AM is the easiest to beat. Old tight rocks and night dealers who just got off work. It's a joke.

    Live Games...NLHE.

On the weekend, the most profitable place to play is MGM or Exalibur. 1/2NL. It is a joke. Young kids flock to those casinos because its pretty center strip. They are drunk and stupid and have tons of daddy's money. I had a Friday/Saturday 2/5NL session at MGM where I won 6 buy ins. 500 into 3700.

Binion's in the morning is all retired old people, you can push them off everything but the nuts. At night it is live as hell. They also offer tons of limit games.

NEVER PLAY AT TEXAS STATION. Numerous dealers at other casinos told me its rigged...who knows. Why risk it?

    More food stuff:

Terrible's is a shitty little casino...no poker room...great buffet though.

Night Club tickets, if you need any before you go, pm me. I have a ton for pre, light, jet, voodoo lounge, coyote ugly, house of blues etc...if I don't have what you need, I have some friends in Vegas still who will.

    As for clubs/drinking:

Voodoo Lounge is at the top of The Rio. Wicked view, cool atmosphere.
Pure is totally lame, but tons of chicks, long lines outside...
Coyote Ugly in NYNY is just like in the film. I prefer the Big Apple Lounge in NYNY tho.
House of Blues in Mandalay Bay is awesome on Saturdays. They have this band called Boogie Knights...totally retro.

Everywhere you are going to play will offer free drinks, tip a decent amount...like a single and she will come back often.

Pm me if you need more info on whatever.
  • Sorry...I totally rambled haha.
  • Good report Haddon. Have to agree on Main Street Station. Good buffet for the price.

The site you want to check out is Cheapo Vegas - cheapovegas.com
Hilarious read. Also www.bigempire.com/vegas/ - same guys tell you how to do Vegas on $0.25 per day. The trip reports are awesome.
  • If you are willing to fly on a Tuesday (or saturday) and out of Buffalo, round trip flights to vegas are available for $169 CAD all-in (United and Delta).

    http://matrix.itasoftware.com

It's the booking engine that travelocity will be moving to in the future. Click for a 'Month long search', from 'BUF' to 'LAS', 3-4 nights, sales city 'YYZ'.

Combine that with the easy $50/nite at IP (I dont have a good hook for hotels in vegas right now) and I'm looking at about $400 all-in.

As a flight comparison, it was about $400 to fly out of Toronto. What a canadian rip.
  • thanks for the tips guys.

The only problem with BBC's suggestion is that I live in Vancouver now, not in Ontario anymore. However, it would be worthwhile to explore the options out of Seattle.
  • Seattle/Buffalo/Detroit...its easier out of the states. As of Feb 20th (or close to there) you need a Passport to fly "into" the US, but, not to cross the border and fly within the US.

One more small savings if you don't currently have a passport.
  • Cheapest flight for Vancouver is Allegiant Air out of Bellingham. Book yourself directly on-line. I go down two or three times a year and it is anywhere from $79 to $129 US. Going to play at Binions and Imperial Palace (comped free rooms) from Feb 18 - 21 and I paid $109 each way for these direct flights.

Don't miss going to Carnival Court...Happy Hour...between Imperial Palace and Harrahs!!! It is the most fun extreme bartending place with a great stage and free bands you'll ever experience.

Good odds at Slots-of-Fun slot machines and cheap food (i.e. Subway/Pizza/Hot Dogs) and low dem bj tables. I won a $10,000 progressive jackpot on one of their 25 cent red/white/blue slots a few years ago.

Easy nl hold-em poker tournies for $80 buyin at Imperial Palace. Easy play...lots of tourists playing limit for first time so if you have patience for limit go for it and double your rack.

Cheapest beer/drinks on the Strip - to sit back and get away from the casinos:
99cent beer etc. incl Heinekins: Slots of Fun, Casino Royale, O'Sheas.
