Superstitions at the Table

Ok I'm just curious...

What are some the the strangest, funniest, or just right out to lunch, superstitions you've seen or do yourself at the Poker Table...

An example that came up at the Sunday PokerForum.ca bounty tournament that I find was the "I always get beat by a lesser hand when I'm up against Graham" :)

My personal 5 favourites are:
- is that if i pick my cards up with my left hand I will have a better hand.
- if I get a bad beat then I can't play the next hand because it will happen again.
- playing a rush
- if the same hand is dealt back to back to you, then you'll win the second time
- the "I can't beat that player" attitude.

Just curious if others have anything that they feel changes their game, but for the most part may not have any basis in fact...

  • Many poker players have silly superstitions. I was playing in a four-table cash tournament last week with a Skill Level of 6. When we were drawing seats for the final table, one player refused to leave his "lucky seat." While a few other silly players whined about leaving their "lucky" seats and having to move into a different position that was "bad luck," this player threatened to quit and kept arguing against the tournament director.

Another silly superstition is asking for a deck change or dealer change just because the player is losing. A dealer was about to do his job of dealing final table, but this one player demanded that somebody else deal just because he had previous losses with this particular dealer. :-[
  • I ask for deck changes/deck washes after 3-4 orbits without a playable hand.
I know it doesn't actually do anything it just helps my psyche.

Not superstition, but I always look at one card at a time. I always, and I mean always know when I am getting a pocket pair after looking at the first card...I've proven on numerous occasions and when I look at one and say, "I am 100% the next card will pair this." I have never ever been wrong. It's totally crazy and makes me sound like an idiot but it is totally true. In low limit home games I announce it and show it just to prove it.
  • LOL, when I won the Great Canadian Poker Tourney at the docks, I kept my coat over my chair and an empire poker hat on backwards for the whole thing. Going into the final table I gave my g/f my coat, then just before it started I said NO I don't want to change anything give me the coat back. It must have worked since first hand I was dealt AA and a raise and an all in before it got to me. Easy call, AA hold's up then on to win.
  • I listen to slow music, calms my nerves so I don't get eager to play alot of hands. Keeps me relaxed and focused.
  • When I won the $275+25 tourny at Rama in July I ordered a bottled water about an hour into the tourny. As the the tourny went on and my stack grew bigger I would simply take small sips and would not finish the bottle until I had won the tourny. It was nothing I had planned but just hit me as I was playing.
In cash games if I am not having any luck I will switch my hat from forward to backwards or vice versa(will also do this with my chair).
I always look at my whole cards the same way everytime. Holding them sideways one over the other and peek at the bottom card and then very slowly slide the top card up.

  • Some guys look at their cards one at time. Others have their lucky trinkets. Thats about all ive seen really
  • It is very bad luck to be superstitious!!!

    lol, amazing
  • I have two..something about messy chip stacks throws me off..so mine is always in neat and easily countable stacks (usually in order of value also)

and I almost never look at my cards until all the others have been dealt (this one is a childhood superstition that is just habit now)
  • Has anyone tried switching the table positions on your desktop while playing on line after getting runs of bad luck/cards and presto these runs turn to runs of AK JJ, hitting monsters on the lop on your blinds... works for me
  • I never, ever let TNorth deal and call out what 'could' happen, because it always 'does' happen and I lose. Thanks a lot Tom. ;)
