how to think and do what you think?

my brain say fold fold fold, then out of no where, i say all-in.......
this is the hand, i'm still kicking myself for it.
tournment play
I have J 10 off suited, i have position
limb in
sb limb, bib limb.
folp J 7 6
sb check
bb bet 1000
i raise to 2000 to find out where my J is at.
sb cold call, bb fold.
i'm thinking. if call my raise, he has a J or on a straight draw.
just to note, I may get too aggressive on them.
Turn 2
to my suprise, sb bet 3500 into the pot
so, straight draw is out, he must has a J, i'm thinking AJ, KJ, QJ,J10 are all playable cards, and my hand is on the bottom of it, it's beat. must fold.
then i start to talking to myself...he could just has middle pair, to my suprise, i push all my 10000 chips in the middle.
he has J 7, got me on the flop, river is blank.....
i play so bad on this hand, i could of raise blind, he may folded, and i should of fold it on the turn. but i put my stack in.......beating myself up right now.
this is the club i get my ass hand it to me twice, because i'm to passive. today, i am catching up the level, i knock out 3 people, setting myself up to win it, and i would have really good shot at it, if wasn't for this stupid decision.

  • Don't beat yourself up too bad.. there is opportunity to learn here.

A: Harrington says in his "Harrington on Hold 'Em" books that he never goes broke on top pair

B: Brunson in "Super System" says don't go broke in an unraised pot

C: I believe it was Phil Gordon in his "Little Green" book (beanie'll correct me on this one) that as much as he's played and studied the game, he still routinely makes like 6 big mistakes in a session.

Unlucky for you, you followed the wrong advice. It happens, learn forget the loss, not the lesson.

  • Here's what I learnt, happens alot at the BBC too. If you are the raiser after the flop and the other person calls, then automatically throws a bet in on the turn. The opponent is not stupid to be betting into an original raiser, this move is done, so that the raiser can raise back at the person who bet the turn. This is what they want you to do.

    Example of this:

I have 7/8 out of position

    Flop is 5 A 6

I bet the flop, guy raises, I flat call

Turn card 10 (I pick up a flush draw now too)

I bet, he raises, I re-raise, he calls

    River card is 9

    I bet, he raises, I re-raises

    He flips over AA

**This is a perfect example, so be wary of the bet on the turn, usually just flat call, don't raise. Although it was a draw, nothing was gonna get me off the hand. Flush draw and OESD

    hey mike
do you know what 6 big mistake phil gordon has?
  • I'm pretty sure they're different mistakes every time...

And the more I think about it, the less I think it was Phil Gordon... like I said, Beanie will know.

Monkey-mind - it happens to us all. Some of the "poker advice" here is useless for that, since it sounds like you knew what you should do, you just ignored that and pushed anyway. This is really just a discipline thing and simply takes practice to control yourself and experience so that you trust yourself. Just give it time and don't beat yourself up too much about it.

Sorry to disappoint, but Beanie has no clue what Mark is thinking (hmm... that sounds familiar ;) ).
  • I believe it WAS Phil Gordon to say that in Little Green Book...I'll have to review it myself though to be certain.

Going Monkey Mind happens...brain KNOWS what to do...mouth does something completely different...it's like being married...wife says something, and my brain just doesn't register it ;)
  • Min raise is a nasty thing... Me thinks you prolly shoulda raised mabye 2500 after his 1K bet. If he then goes all in over top you can get away. If he calls you're in trouble too. The push was kinda wacky... He had already invsted over 5500 and your reraise is only costing him 4500 into a pot over 16000.
