another "is this legal?" question...

What if..I charged $50 for you to come and hear me give a seminar...then afterward there was a free freezeout poker tournament and no cash prizes were awarded...yet prizes are awarded as donations via an online source?

loop holey enough?

  • did this stump everyone? :)
  • good one, illegal, but here's the kicker. (wait a sec, is that where this pun came from?)

If the $50 is required to play in the tournament, it's illegal. as there's still the house making money and a chance game being played.

If I could just show up and play poker and not pay for the seminar it might be legal?
  • or if you make it that the people who were at the seminar are first come first serve on the list for the poker game but if any seats are open they can go to the people that didnt pay anything. eg. person pays for seminar but leaves right after. then a person who didnt pay for seminar can take his spot but people who had paid are on the first choice list for playing waise.
  • ... but I'd bet that if the authorities put together the whole string they would prosecute. It might make it difficult to investigate but wouldn't protect the operators from prosecution.

Another term for government is 'the biggest gang on the block' and they own the gambling biz and want the masses to be customers not competition.
