When to take a free card?

Hey All,

Well I have been posting a lot of hands lately and the reason is I seem to be in a bit of a bad streak so I wanted to keep running these hands by you all to get your feedback and make sure I am making the right moves..
I wanted to run this one by you and get your thoughts on taking a free card. When is the right time to check when your opponent has checked to you... I think I screwed up here and should of made a move.
By the way the flushes have been killing me...

  • Meh....

I don't think you played this badly.

    Pre-flop:

YOU: Decent hand, 3x BB raise from MP isn't bad, I like it.
Villain: M is 4-5, flat calling is a bad idead - push or fold IMO
8-10 suited? Well, this may be "It's my lucky hand" mentality

    Flop: Oh the mighty 7-8

You: Checked to you, and you check as well with A-high. Would I have bet? Maybe, would your bet (say pot-sized) have gotten rid of villain? Well, again, he's put in 1400 / 3400 already - about 35% of his stack, he should be pushing
    Villain: Should have pushed.

Turn: Gives you top pair on a two suited board

You: Re-raise a weak bet - 800 into a pot of about 3000, and put him all in - good move IMO, unless you feel he has a set or was slow-playing and is now protecting against the flush - but 800 is not a big bet, and I would doubt it. Any reads on the player would come into play here.

Villain: He has 1400 left and the pot is now about 6k... he's getting great odds considering he has an open-ended straight draw and a flush draw and should call, as he does.

You: Re-raise a weak bet (800 into a pot of

    River: Sucks for you

So, on a tally sheet, it looks like the villain made 2 big errors and you made no obvious errors. I don't hate the check, but there may be something to be said for putting him all in on the flop.

Here's a question, he goes all-in pre-flop do you call? Barring any reads and such, I probably would have, and lost all my money there too.

    Mark
  • Nice raise preflop, but I would have bet the flop.
You showed strength preflop so I like to bet about 3/4 of the pot here representing an overpair (or a set).

If he had the 78 or flopped a small set I'd expect a raise (if he was aggressive).

I agree with Mark, on the turn the villian is getting great odds for a call and RiverStars lives up to it's name.
