Trip Report Port Perry Tournament

I arrived at the Great Blue Heron Casino full of confidence for the days no-limit holdem tournament. After chatting with several players who I have known for several years but only see at these tournaments I sign in and go to my table.
I am at table 7 seat 5.
I see 2 players who I know are very tricky and the remaining players I do not recognize. After rebuying straight away I have 3000tc and the blinds are 25-50.
My plan during the rebuy period was to play tight and conservative in the blinds and early pos(fold 99sAQs and smaller), loosen up slightly in mid pos, and limp in to mutiway pots in late pos with anything reasonable. Raise all premium hands from any pos. I wanted to get a feel for the players at this table before I mix it up to much. I was watching for a weak tight player whose blinds I could take in later stages. Also looking for any player who are loose and passive. I want to play flops with these types and avoid raising their blinds with any thing but premium hands since they will call.

NOt much happend for me during the rebuy period. I did win a pot with AK and had 4500tc when this hand came up.
Blinds are 50 /100
I have K10s on the button. 3 limpers to me I call both blinds call.
Flop come K 7 8 rainbow
blinds check 2 limpers check the 3rd limper( a retired gentleman who liked to limp alot)bets 300. What should I do? What would you do? I think I have him beat here but what about the other players? I decide to call and see what the early limpers do. Every one else folds.
Turn is 3
K 7 8 3
He bets 300 again. hmmm i feel that I am good at this point but for some reason I dont raise I decide to just call. Could he have a bigger K than me KJ or KQ?
river is Q
He checks, I am glad to check this and see what he has. He shows 9 10 for a straight draw. That is interesting he bets his draws on flop and turn. I take a mental note as I scoop in the chips.
I play no more hands except for the unraised blinds. I have been getting no good cards at all hopefully this will change after the add on.

The rebuy period ends and I take the add on. I now have 6900 tc
blinds will be 100/200

I have picked out 2 players who are playing very tight and will take their blinds in the later stages of the tourney if they are still in. I also decide that I want to play as many pots as I can against the old guy( the 9 10 hand). I have a good read on him he bets small with a draw or AK that misses the flop, and bets the pot or larger with top pair or over pair.

I start this level as the big blind
I get 63os
folded to the button who limps in
SB limps
I check
flop is A 9 3
SB checks
I bet out 400 ( I think the button would have raised pre flop with an Ace in his hand so lets put some pressure on him here and see what he does. Plus I have a very tight image at this point)
they both fold.
I have 7300

In the small blind I get AQ
early limper, late limper and button limps
I decide to limp in also
flop is A K 6
I check( I am planning to check raise if one of the late limpers bet and I just might fold if the early limper bets since he is a very tight player who limps with AK preflop)
Early pos checks late limper bets 500 other limper folds i raise to 1500
everyone folds and I take the pot.
I have 8600

One off the button I get 44
two early limpers mid pos makes it 1500 to go.
I fold. the raise is to big for me to try and flop a set here
I play no more hands until next level

Blinds are 200/400
I have 8000
I am the button
I have 52s
folded to the old guy he raises to 900
I call its time to exploit my read on this guy
both blinds fold
Flop is Qc 6c 4 I have a gut shot straight draw
he bets 500 The pot contains 2400 so this is a very small bet. I feel he has AK AJ or Ax of clubs. If I raise he will fold AK here but if he does have the flush draw ( I know he likes to bet his draws) he will probably call any way.
I call
turn is Qs
He bets 500 again OK I dont think he has any pair and a raise should get him to fold AK or a flush draw.
I raise to 2500 he mucks instantly

I have 10500tc
we are down to 5 tables left now
Several new players fill our empty seats
the blinds are 300/600 when this hand comes up
One of the new players( I have played many tournaments with this guy in the local club)moves all in from UTG for 6500

folded to me I have AK (from what I know of this player he could have AK or a PP Qs or smaller. I know he does not have AA or KK since he would not raise so much with those hands)
I fold. I dont need to risk a little more that half my stack on what I know is a coin flip. I am sure there will be a better spot for my chips.
No one else calls

I get no chances to play any hands for a while. Several players are raising like crazy making limping in impossible and I dont have the cards to call raises with.
blinds are 400/800
I have 9400tc
Folded to me in mid pos I have QJs
A tight player is in the blind so I raise to 2000
Every one folds
NO more hands this level

we are down to 4 tables blinds go up to 500/1000
I have 9400tc
I get AA in mid pos I raise to 2500
folded to the big blind who moves all in for 12000
YES finally a good hand and action
I call
He show pocket 10s
Flop is J 10 8
turn Q
river 7
Thats all folks

I got my money in as a 4-1 fav but got out flopped
Oh well I had fun.

I also got to meet Don Carlito during one of the breaks. It was nice chatting with you Carlos I hope you enjoyed the oysters..lol

Look forward to some comments

  • what a great blow by blow. i'm honestly amazed at how people remember all these hands they are involved with.

while no one wants to lose, can't think of any other way to go out of a tourney than with the rockets.

    chugs
  • I agree with Chugs - that was a great account of your tourney and short of writing in a notebook I don't know how I would ever recount hands like that.

But I disagree with CHugs on the pocket rockets - that is a terrible way to go out. No Justice. I'd rather have Q 7 offsuit and push my stack in and get beat by a pair of 9's.....losing as a HUGE favourite blows.
  • Tough way to go out.

You sure had that one guy in a tiny box.

And the box had notes taped on the outside entitled "How the Guy in the Box Plays Poker".

Thanks for the report, nice read.

  • When I go to a tournament like this I take a small notebook and a pen with me and jot down my chip count at the end of each level as well as any interesting hands that come up. I also take notes on some players that I know play in these events all the time.
The pit and dealers at the Blue Heron do not allow personal items to be placed on the table during the tournament so I keep the pen and note book in my pocket untill I feel the need to make a notation.

Yes I had that guy in a nice little box. He busted out a couple of hands after I beat him with the 52s. I was hoping he would stick around for a while.
  • Good read. Tough way to bust out.
  • good read. i agree with what someone else said, where i would rather go out with a shit hand, cause losing with rockets is the type of thing that makes me lose sleep (sadly, its true!). quality read though.
