Canadian Banks Following the US lead (even though it isn't a law)

I opened ScotiaBank Visa statement last night and at the very top in larger letters was a paragraph on how they will no longer allow for deposits/withdrawls from "illegal" online gambling websites.

Two things about this:
1. Holy shit! (pardon my french) Why, what's the problem? Now I have neteller, so that should probably still work. Haven't tried that yet.
2. They actually used the term illegal meaning that they have a list of legal gambling websites?

Explanation? The only thing I can think of is that the big Canadian banks all do business in the US and with US companies, etc. The Carolina Hurricanes play in the RBC Center for crying out loud. That's the Royal Bank of Canada. And if you doubt the strength of the American influence, look at how they spelled Centre! smiley.gif

Maybe you should call them and get the list of Legal sites....

Most Visa/MC issuers had stopped processing payments to gambling sites not because they were illegal but because they were loosing too much money on those with gambling problems.
  • While the government while defending their insane bill (see the other thread) has said they ammended the consumer protection act to protect consumers from illegal gambling sites. They feel these illegal sites should not be allowed to advertise. Our government believes they are illegal. I guess I should be worried about my 3K in various sites.....LOL

Thank you. The world isn't ending. This doesn't sound like anything new. I, for one, know I couldn't make my initial online deposit 2.5-3ish years ago via my VISA, so I got a Neteller acct. No biggie.
  • that's funny because I could always use my VISA but my mastercard MEH. I don't know if either works anymore since I strictly use neteller.

It really depended on the issuer.
I had no problems with TD Visa, but others that I know could not use their visas.
  • For the time being it looks like Neteller is going to toe the US line. It will not process payments etc from on line poker sites.

I guess I need to see how to start my own on line payment site to capture all this US money that needs diverting.
  • :o

So much for all those who said "I'll just use Neteller". There is definately a business opportunity here - Haddon, get on it!. Firepay must have a grin a mile wide.

Firepay jumped shipped 2 weeks ago (at least for US players).
