Reef gave you a bunch of random points. The comment about the quartets was in reference to their rarity in casinos and that if you ever find some, in general you should collect as many as you can because you can sell them on eBay for 4x face value minimum. Conversely since casinos know this, if they have them at all, they guard them very closely because they are losing money on every that disappears into someone's pocket.

Hands down best value and quality for the money would be to use either of the two links I gave you. Best value would be to get in on the preorder link I gave but I feel you might prefer custom labeled chips. If you go custom ceramic through PGI then it would be a bit cheaper.

If you go with a used casino set, you are looking at a min of $1-1.50 per chip and there is nothing out there right now in quantity so you would have to get lucky and buy someone else's set from chiptalk. Black Friday is coming and thechiproom usually has a Sale but afaik they have almost nothing in stock.

One of the issues you might run into if you buy "a little at a time is colour variance. Try as they might, batch mixing does not always stay "true" from one to the next. Not even with ceramics, as I found out when adding to one of my sets. If you are going to buy $1.00 chips, I would buy all you need in one shot. Same for $5.00 chips, and so on. At least that way, your denominations will be consistent on an individual level.

And yeah, moose's links are to some pretty nice chips.

Tip: Go with $20.00 chips for your cash set. No one buys in with $25.00 bills, do they?

Absolutely happy! Personally I think that's a huge amount of wow factor! The gift that keeps giving all year 'round on a monthly basis. Don't even question this as a gift Kristy. It's great.

Getting high quality chips will be appreciated by ANY serious poker player. Getting a guaranteed game to go along WITH said chips just gets you MORE brownie points.

Hell, my wife was giddy when I bought her a set of roulette chips, and she is not nearly as "into" chips as I am.
