Do we still have chip enthusiasts here?
I'm looking to buy a set as a Christmas gift, but I'm unsure of how to decide which denominations to buy, and from whom. I'd also love some guidance on quality.

Most often hosting 10 person SNGs followed (hopefully quickly!) by 1/2 max 500 cash. I'd love to find something that can do double duty, and, if possible, keep the cost under $500.

Any direction/discussion appreciated! :)

Double duty will be tough unless you go non-denominated and then your choices go waaay down.

You are a creative type, I would go the Chinese compression molded clay route and have your own labels made, then you can personalize the gift but make them non-denom.

Prices seem high compared to chiptalk member prices so I would contact them, lay out what you want and then try and cut a deal. They are dealmaker type guys.

for a sng bare min per player:

Usually you wouldn't need to colour up in a sng but you could add 30 $1000s for colourups

If you go denominated that would be 850 chips total.

There is another preorder going on right now which fits your budget. Again these are Chinese made compression clay chips. Prices will go up once they land from China.

For custom order, I would try for around .40 ea and about .06-.15 for labels (not sure of cost there but I also don't know if they are putting the stickers on or you are). But again, you are a good negotiator, you could ask for their best price once you know your totals and then push them for a cheaper deal than that. You catch the owner in a good mood and lots of inventory and they will go way down in price.

I found some PGI pricing from a couple years ago, so this would be the rock bottom price. If you get close to this, you did well.

Just giving you ideas. The background does not have to be white. Many people colour match the labels to the chips

I'm in the process of getting my own chips done as well for my rentals. I have just under 3k chips to relabel but they're going to look pretty decent for cheap. Under $0.30/chip (chip and label cost).

Moose, thanks again. You were the first person I thought of when I was considering how/what to purchase. I remember liking the feel of your chips..I wish they came in more muted colour/aesthetically pleasing configs..but I suppose that would get out of my budget

If you go with ceramics you can get them printed with anything/colour you want but you need some bright colours because in some lighting it can be hard to tell the chips apart. Pgi also makes ceramics. But some people don't care for them. The Chinese compression moulded are the closest thing to real casino chips, though some casinos do use ceramics.

Thoughts:

I like to put much different graphics on each denomination. It makes it easier on colour blind people to tell the differences.

In an idea world we never have to make change.

It's nicer to have more chips so you don't have to keep making change.

If you play with high quality chips you won't want to play with lower quality chips again.

Go for the highest quality you can get.

Lots of people get a set. And then get a better quality set ... and so on.

Cash game sets:

You can get real casino quality chips, at a casino for $1 each.

If they have $0.25 chips *ALWAYS* get some.

You could just buy five racks of $5 chips and let $100 bills play.

That would cover your cash game needs.

If you're looking a full custom ceramic then you should talk to Joe and Palm Gaming. They have pretty decent chips and a good rate. A friend of mine bought some James Bond theme ceramics from them for much cheaper than I would have expected.

It's hard to get 1 set for both cash and tourney, you'll likely have to get 2 sets or just one big set that covers all denoms.

Reef: Thanks for the colour blind point. I'm mildly embarrassed that I didn't think of it… My dad is colourblind.
-if I only want to play 1/2 or bigger… What would be the benefit of having $.25 chips?

Question: if I was going to go super big… And only buy a bit at a time...is there a huge upgrade to be had? We have Christmas, birthday, Valentine's Day, Easter (yes we buy Easter presents) all happening in the first few months of the year. If I doubled my budget --and focussed solely on cash--would I see a huge, noticeable, upgrade in quality?

If you're ok with "off the rack chips", straight poker is having a sale right now on some of their midline chips. They won't be the quality of the ones seen above, but they will fit your budget.

Lol, no rake. My husband doesn't get out as much as he'd like to, to play. I was thinking I'd buy him a set of good chips and hire a dealer for a monthly poker night with his buddies.

[then I'm gonna ask my teenager for baby sitting coupons for Mother's Day...and take all their money. ;)]

I was shopping out the recommendations itt to see if I cod find a U.S. supplier who charged less...and I keep running into weights. What is the ideal? Can you give me any tips on terminology? I'm seeing HUGE variance in price and I'm having trouble figuring out the difference.
