It's time to set poker goals for 2014. Below is mine.
1) Try to have a similar win rate or ROI as in 2013 in the GTA casinos which probably has the best-value tournaments for non-pros in the entire world, :cool2: such as Rama (only 5% rake), Woodbine (4%), Mohawk/Georgian Downs/Western Fair (4%), Brantford (8%), Point Edward (9%), Fallsview (4.8%-11.8%) and Great Blue Heron (GBH, 9%) Casinos.
2) Battle for the GBH "King of the Cards" Championship. The last time I played live in GBH was four years ago in the "King of the Cards" Invitational. Winter Is Coming.
3) Having won multiple $1,100 entries for WPT Fallsview already, try to win multiple entries to the $2,500 and $5,000 events. Maybe sell any extra entries at or below face value to the pros I met through 2+2 or from previous WPT events.
4) Win a satellite package (or be a "+1" guest again) to one or more of the following: $7K WPT Fallsview, PCA 2015, WSOP-C Canada, Playground WPT/PokerStars events, or just about anywhere I can take my kid with no &^%$#@! 30% withholding tax.
5) I have withdrawn all my online cash profits after being disillusioned by bwin.party, but if conditions are right, go back to playing online, e.g., PokerStars VIP or a Haas-improved PartyPoker.
6) Find a study partner or group, like the University of Waterloo group who helped keep making each other better and better.
7) Go to DisneyWorld with my kid, hopefully play a cash game in a Florida poker room (NOT tournament).
8) It looks like the WPT and WSOP-C events in Fallsview, Playground, etc. will be in Canada for years, so many more Canadians than before will have huge cashes. My long-term goal is to surpass my biggest cash ever (Brantford). I will then tip the dealers of course, e.g., the maximum $200 in merchandise to each dealer who is part of the WPT Fallsview dealer pool.
9) Play more instead of posting in poker forums and social media. Any free time I have for poker should be spent playing or studying to improve, instead of social media. I shall be removing these social media sites from my automatic startup page, and won't visit them until after a game or studying session. I will still see the members who play in casinos, but it's time to pass on the poker posting torch to others.
10) Unless it's +$EV, politely decline the silly bubble donation, even if the shortest stack is your BFF. This is poker, not a charity!

1) Set enough aside from live cash games/tourney to build a strictly vegas bankroll in 2014 for the VDSE/WSOP. Goal of 30k. about halfway there ATM so going to roll this over from 2013 as June only allows me to grind half of 2014.
2) Stop losing money in tournaments online as the high variance big field gameplay can be crushing on the mind. Basically sattys only if I want to play, no direct buyins. Hard to commit to this as I do play online a fair bit, sometimes frustration leads to just buying in, need to fix.
3) Win seats for WPT fallsview! At the very least a 2.5k seat but id love to play the 5k main. Similar to online, constantly buying into tournies can damage the bankroll if you run poorly, must fix by succeeding.
3) Non-Poker: Get in better shape, weights, running, derp derp derp, im bad at this so i have to find a trainer to give me a workout routine and understand wtf I have to do. Im like 5'10 175lb with a fairly thin build but i want to replace fat with muscle.

Other than just playing more poker in general, my goal is to get playing online again on a regular basis. I have recently started focusing on 9max .10.25 ring games, and really trying to get back to basics. In terms of specific things I want to accomplish:
1. After 50K hands I want to see VPIP ranges of 30% in late position, 22% mid position, 14% in early position. This is a tough one for me, as I love to play me some garbage... but the loose preflop approach hasn't worked online for me in the past.
2. Get my WSD% up. Gotta stop the second guess hero calling when I have done the math and know I'm beat. Looking for 55%-60% after 50K hands.
3. Re-evaluate at 100K hands. Move up to .25 .50 if the 2 goals above are reached and the BB/100 is in the positive.
Seems so simple... we'll see.

I think I will keep my poker goals straight forward as well for 2014. Play more cash games and continue to have enjoyable poker vacations throughout 2014.

1) get everything non-poker related in order
2) go back to the drawing board on poker if #1 is met.

Download p90x and win. No trainer required. I had the same motivation problem.

if you have access to an olympic weight set this is actually a very good way to improve really quickly. They guy's description of the workout is a bit overblown with hyperbole but it actually works. got all of my lifts up very fast.
StrongLifts 5x5: Ultimate Strength & Muscle Building Program StrongLifts
basically this if the web page is TL/DR quality. it's worth the read but...
you’ll always alternate between the same 2 workouts…
StrongLifts 5×5 Workout A
Squat 5×5
Bench Press 5×5
Barbell Rows 5×5
StrongLifts 5×5 Workout B
Squat 5×5
Overhead Press 5×5
Deadlift 1×5
the main theory is the squats raise testosterone levels which is true. the multijoint lift like that has been proven to do so. This makes the other moves more effective at building as well. this with good nutrition worked well for me but gets effing boring after a while so added other pieces to it.
don't forget the cardio though.
if P90X works out as well, let us know! Good luck

After some self analysis of my online poker results, a disturbing and horrifying realization has hit me, I have no bankroll management skills and play way too far above my bankroll.
In 2013, I played $3100 in buy-ins where the tournament buy in was $33 or above and I only won $990.00, a loss of almost $2100. When the buy in was under $33, I made a profit of $1000. So yes, I lost $1100 last year playing online poker.
I won a few live events this year which helped to offset the online losses and keep me about even for the year but with some bankroll discipline online, it could have been much, much better.
My main goal for 2014 is to only play buy-ins, online, under $11. And upon further analysis, try to keep the field size under 1000 runners.
My secondary goal is to qualify for larger live events through the satties being offered by PFC members and keep playing the regular PFC member live tournaments monthly.

Upon further inspection into OPR, when the buy in was under $5, I won $4,880 and my profit was $2,437 for a 100% ROI. The bigger scores were $3.30+R and $2.20+R so still under the $11 limit I am setting for myself per tourney.
If anyone sees me playing in a tournament over $11, PM me a link to this thread to kick me in the ass.

I am setting no goals for poker in 2014. Not even sure how much I will play this coming year.

One of my major poker goals this year is to play as much live poker as possible. Trouble is, I now live in Cranbrook BC. There is nearly ZERO live poker in Cranbrook. We have a casino with a really nice little poker room. What we do NOT have are enough dealers in our casino to even have someone deal in to poker room. Its so sad.
However, all live poker i play this year I will be keeping track of. My only goal is to end up on the plus side. My usual game is $1/$2 NL. I'm also hoping to play some live tournaments.
As for online play, I am quitting online tournaments. I gave it a real go in 2013 with no results worth writing home about. The only online play I will be doing this year are WSOP satties. Im setting aside $1000 to try and win a ME seat.

My 'Goal' such as it is, is to actually learn some of the actual Strategies of Poker so that I can play competently with friends.

1) Supernova on Stars.
2) Win a wsop main event seat.
They're both really volume-related goals for me. Not sure how I'll do because I'll be pretty busy with work and travel but I'm planning to accomplish both of them with the ~$350 I currently have on Stars.
