During the COVID pandemic Canada's Liberal government followed the science and public health care professionals when they recommended policies for masking, staying at home etc. In a true show of statesmanship Trudeau held a public press conference every day to provide updates. And he included 'experts' to handle specific questions related to science and health care policy. On the other hand, during the trucker-convoy-debacle, Mr. P.P. showed his true colours by going over and shaking their hands. Because, you know, votes! The Canadian government secured enough vaccine for everyone and achieved a high rate of vaccination which saved thousands of lives. I thank them for being responsible and cringe when I think about the cons being in control.
The vast majority of truckers just did their jobs, but convoys appeared in Ottawa and on the border (most notably in Windsor where they eventually cost almost 4 billion dollars in lost trade. In Ottawa they disrupted the city and I have friends living downtown where stores were closed, some truckers were rude and their lives were disrupted. I believe that if all the levels of police were working together the Emergencies act would not have been necessary, but they weren't. So it took that act to enforce kick out the criminals and conspiracy nuts and free the city (and the borders). Later, a commission was held in public with testimony from many sources (including Trudeau) and agreed that invoking those powers was warranted.
A minority of Canadians felt some compassion for these 'protestors' but only a very small minority agreed with their goals. As someone said "in the world wars we asked you to die for your country. Now, we are asking you to stay home and watch Netflix".
Everyone is welcome to protest and post their own opinion (no matter how divisive or wacko and unsubstantiated it may be). But I'm happy we had a responsible government at that time and so were a vast majority of Canadians. The Liberals also introduced many programs to help with lost wages, rent, keeping jobs available for laid off workers and more. These contributed for the debt but did save lives and prevented some amount of homelessness.
