  • I too am going to LV for the 1st time in September. My wife suggested we go there for our 5th Anniversary. I spent several hrs researching all the main casinos. We are staying at the Luxor which has a poker room as well. There is so much to see and do that it was hard to pick shows etc.
I am so anal that I have an itinerary for each day because I hate playing the the following game with my wife...
Me: "So, What do you want to do today?
Wife: "I don't know! What do you want to do?"
Me Thinking: "I want to play ****ing poker goddamit!" ala Cartman.
If I say what I'm thinking I'll get a guilt trip instead of a trip to the casino.
I spoke at length to my travel agent and a friend who has been to Vegas 40 times. They both highly recommended seeing the Blue Man Group and one of the Cirque Du Soleil shows.

I also have penciled in two tournaments. One is a $55NL Freezeout at the Luxor and the other a $500NL Freezeout at the Bellagio.
Almost all of the poker rooms host daily tournaments. The buy-ins range from $25 to $1000.

As a poll to those who have gone to Vegas. Which poker room in vegas is your favourite? And why?

First place I would go would be Circus Circus, the other place might be hard to find. ;)

Best free stuff, fountains at Bellagio at night, pirate show at Treasure Island, volcano and the white tigers at Mirage.

Overrated: the gondola ride at Venetian, any ride at any of the casinos, Fremont street experience (though this is free too).

Seafood buffet: Rio - worth it if you like seafood

Totally worth it: 'O' Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group. Reserve tickets early but if there is a show you want to see and it is sold out then the casinos have stand by lineups for casino comp turnbacks. We waited in line twice for 'O'. First time we didn't get there early enough and second time we got 3rd row seats!
  • I was down there a few weeks ago and played in a bunch of poker rooms. Unfortunately I didn't pay too much attention to the details (like what limits were offered and the rake policy)

MGM Grand - seemed nice, but I was actually playing in a private room upstairs (how the group convinced them to spread a 2/4 mixed game is beyond me). From all accounts, juicy games and a well run room. 20ish tables. This was probably the slickest of the rooms I played in. (though the Bellagio looked nice even if I didn't dare sit down)

Excalibur - A pretty busy room, played 2/6 spread. There seemed to be a few regular players here, but seemed like a beatable game. And I hit quad-9s and won $100 spinning the wheel. Would probably check this room out again.

Aladdin - Smaller room, maybe 10 tables. The 3/6 I was in was pretty good, but their tournament structure was just awful. With all the other good rooms, I don't plan on going back, even though I met the friendliest dealer on the trip here.

The Plaza - This was homebase for my stay (cheap rooms). Played in some good 2/4, 3/6 games. It varies, but they have one great cardroom manager that made us feel very welcome. They also brought in donuts and coffee at 8am in the morning when we'd been playing all night. :) They don't usually have more than a handful of tables actually running, but the juiciest game I found in Vegas (3/6) happened here. They also have a couple tournaments every day.

Golden Nugget - Maybe 12 tables. Played 4/8 on a pretty good table. Lots of calling stations and good opportunities to earn some chips. Unfortunately, my cards were running so cold that I eventually ended up on tilt just because I was frustrating I wasn't taking any money out of the game. I'll definitely be hitting this room again.

As for other attractions, I saw "O" and it was amazing. Definitely worth the money. The new Cirque show "Ka" is supposed to be good as well, but "O" is a must see. We ended up reserving tickets online about 5 days before the show. Also, my buddy and I went to see The Star Trek Experience at the Hilton. It wasn't anything mind-blowing, but for even a casual Star Trek fan it was pretty fun.

The Fremont Street experience is unquestionably lame and I just couldn't wait for it to end. One of the cool things I did see downtown was a stand set up with 3 guys making drinks with "flair" (think Tom Cruise in Cocktail). Was actually pretty cool to see and my buddy ended up with an interesting bubbling blue concoction. The Shrimp Cocktail at the Golden Gate is overrated, but yes, you can get it for a dollar.
  • thanks everybody.

    Any other suggestions??
  • One more question.

What casino's offer NL tourneys, or do most offer these??
  • I liked the spread limit games offered by the Excalibur (1-3 and 2-6), play was very soft there. The room at MGM was fairly nice, but a bit loud with a bar right beside it. Check out the Bellagio water show in the evening, it's a pretty cool sight. As far as food I'd highly recommend the Bellagio buffet. It's a little pricier (35-40 bucks US) but well worth it IMHO. The variety and quality stuff on the buffet is impressive. Crab legs, sushi, about 8-10 kinds of salmon, venison, prime rib, rack of lamb, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention, just wandering through the Bellagio on a Friday, or Saturday night you're bound to see some of the hottest women you'll ever see...
  • Where to Play :D

  • I was around to see tournaments at two of the cardrooms I played in while I was in Vegas. The Aladdin tournament had no play and was a complete crapshoot before the first hour was up. While I didn't actually play in The Plaza tournament (they started one at noon, 7pm and midnight if I recall correctly) those that did play in them seemed to enjoy themselves. All tourneys I say were NLHE.
