dvr-ms files and torrents (Daily Show)

Either way, those dvr-ms files can be huge! At setting of Best I figure you'll need about 3GB of disk per hour of recording. I need some help with...
1. Converting the dvr-ms file to wmv or avi or some similar format. Are there any free converters out there you can recommend? I think avi is best because I can edit the file? Somehow the clocks are off and I have 4 minutes of recording I don't need. I believe the advantage of keeping the dvr-ms format is you can easily fast forward and such but this file is 1.8 GB so nobody will want to download that for a 30 minute show.
2. When I do reduce the size of this file I'll need to post a torrent. I've never done this but have been on the receiving side. Any suggestions on tools or sites? I've used ABC and BitTornado.
