  • I played a live tournament yesterday, overall I feel I played quite well, I got all in 3 ways with KK v 77 v 75o on a K75 rainbow flop but due to some coolers and unfortunate spots (i folded 1010 on a 9 high flop vs a guy that ended up showing AA and got a an overbet "payed off" on the turn when I had QK v Q10 on a Q high board, unfortunately he binked river) I didn't cash.

The final hand I played I 3bet AQo from the SB vs the villain in the following hand and ended up calling a 27BB shove only to run into AA.

The hand I want to talk about came a few hands prior to that, I had about 90k or so, blinds were 1k/2k (table was somewhat shallow, most people sitting around 30k).

From EP I opened to 4,5k with Ace of diamonds (which is a broken smiley) :ad :ad :ad :jc and got two callers from MP and SB, mp is the main villain of the hand.

    Flop came :6d :7s :10d

    SB check
    I check
    MP bet 6k
    SB fold
I call with a bunch of backdoors and some evil intentions on a bunch of later street cards

turn comes the :2d and goes check check

    River comes a :5s and I fire 16,5k and villain calls with :5h :8h

Villain proceeded to make some table talk with his friends about how in his eyes I was unlikely to be nutted since he expected me to bet all overcard+FD combos on the flop and I'm still proccessing this hand a bit (which might be futile because if I expected him to flop 58s I'd probably consider him a straight up amateur and play a more valueheavy style but I could probably still fit in a couple of bluff combos)

First off my range is decently protected, flop is very wet but my (legit) check calling range as of right now is something like:

AJ-AKdd, A9dd, A8dd, A7dd and A5-A2dd (possibly checkraising A9 and A8dd some %age of the time and occasionally checkcalling QJdd if villain is doublebarrel light happy with the intention of checkraising a bunch of turncards)
    J10s Q10s, 99 88 and A7s

We definitely have some diamonds in there. So the question is how much we can bluff without being too bluffheavy on this river. Obviously the ace of diamonds is a nice card removing a bunch of flush combos from villains range but I might not be a big fan of the jack of clubs blocking J9cc and some random QJcc and KJcc combos villain may decide to fire flop in position with.

Do we want to add in sets into our check calling range here to protect our river range? Probably not, it's tempting but I think we're missing some value on bad turns and directly on flops this wet by not checkraising/cbetting

Do we want a turn leading range? Probably not, I'm not good enough to balance that I think, we're not gonna check call any nutted hands on the flop so we have a bit of a range disadvantage and want to protect our river range. I feel like I may fall for the temptation to check raise some diamond turns here though, which may or may not be a good strategy with Adx type hands considering our range disadvantage on the flop.

So what are our river bluff candidates? Not much, AK-AJ with the ace of diamonds, J9s and QJss are the ones that comes to mind and that's a total of what, 13 combos so we can pick something like 4-5 to bluff is we're conservative. Obviously we have a little bit of showdown with the ace but I think I'm fine treating all these combos like pure bluffs. I think the ones I would like to bluff are combos that block his 10x and contain the ace of diamonds and do so more to the tune of 24-27k as well as bet our nuts to that sizing. I think it would be theoretically sound to bluff AdJxand some AdQx combos and give up AK QJ and J9 and not have a check shoving range here.

things to watch of for of course is to not be too slow figuring this out on the flop, if I hesitate too much on the flop I look pretty weak and weighted towards what I have, probably standardize my time taken before calling to like 4-7 seconds or so. I think if I pull this off properly 5x 6x and 7x can't call me profitably and I'm not underbluffing (or overbluffing) too heavily, I thought it was an interesting spot
  • My head hurts.. ;) lol, love your explanations Richard, they are certainly detailed...
  • Today is my first and only session of the week. I'm having some stress related issues, not going to school when I should and being overall tired, sluggish and down, at least dancing is going well. So I'm trying to cut out stress and get back on my feet the best I can and it turns out playing powerfest event above my bankroll (running a bunch of 22 dollar events and such and a bunch of sattelites into 55 and the occasional 109 buyin) is a great way to get super stressed out. To play 22 I'd like 100 buyins and I have a little over half that, after today I'm therefore moving back down into 10$ tourneys and since party doesn't have many of those it's mostly 5 dollar events.

Today though I'm still in the running for the last man standing freeroll which means that if I cash a powerfest event today (for the 4th sunday in a row) I get entry to their 10k + 10k package freeroll which would be nice.

The events start in 15 minutes and 2 hours and 15 minutes and will include a 109$ PKO shot I'm taking for the sole reason of improving my chance to cash and get the freeroll. So the evening schedule will be the 109, 22 and 5,5$ PKO starting soon as well as the 11 dollar championship event and if things are looking bad also the 55 dollar championship event in a final attempt to cash. Total buyins of around 200 dollars, worst case scenario I finish the day with about 950 dollars on party but lets try to run good.

Also coming up next saturday is a 2 day live event. It's roughly a 700$ FO tournament that i'll use as another datapoint for my attempts to get solid at live poker. I want to put in some hours and some work so that come december I can play the live tournament as comfortably as possible. There are definitely a bunch of demons in my head telling me that I can still get really owned in some spots where I have leaks and if I don't work on those it's very possible that my chances of making it past a certain point go drastically down. I want to keep working to make sure that I'm not so exploitable that any stage of the tournament will print money off off me. But lets start with making good runs today
  • I really like your poker diary Richard!
  • This is just all around a weird hand, between the "but mah skweeze respect me :c" and the call call with KJo and the bad river. I'm rarely gonna be in a position to defend this SB flat vs a squeeze so this seems like a decent hand to do it with, as well as maybe A10s KQ, possibly 88 if I flat those.

Edit: actually KQ and 88 seems like terrible shoves for different reasons, KQ has very good playability if I flat the 3bet and 88 seems to lack a bit of equity when called by BB

  • Villain here is the number one top ranked player on partypoker right now but he appeared to be mashing the open button a bit too much. I'm really suprised he took this line tho, not sure what merit there is in flatting compared to shoving pre if he's gonna gamble it since he started with 19 bigs I believe. On a brighter note we knocked out the top ranked PP player

  • Another interesting hand, I think for balance we're defintely not folding flop that seems standard. The deuce I feel is pretty neutral, we probably have one or two more than him in our range unless he turns them into bluffs on the flop.

On the turn he made a pretty good bet designed to fold out the part of my range I'm holding as well as flushdraws. The problem is that suddenly going big on the turn makes his line crumble a bit, he's repping 88 and A2s that wants a ton of value from a king, but I feel he's gonna shove up with a bunch of please fold hands and Axdd hands. I think it's interesting because I was 100% folding to a more standard double barrel that didn't smell fishy

  • This one is standard to most people who've done the math but how much equity do we need to call this spot vs a player with a 75 dollar bounty (37.5 to the player 37.5 added to your bounty) assuming 50k starting stacks in a 109$ tourney?

Depending on how you count the 50$ starting bounty is worth 50.000 chips or 25.000 chips (since half goes to the knockout pool) meaning we have roughly 3k in the pot pre from antes, 3k from our BB and 37k from his shove. This means we're calling 34k to win 43k in the pot plus either 75.000 chips or 37.500 chips from bounties depending on your count so either

    34/152 = 22.3%

or what I prefer to use

    34/113= 30%

This means that if he's shoving somewhat wide which he almost definitely is we're pretty much calling any two here or at least close to it.

Edit: busted the 22 PKO AK < KK followed by two flips
  • The 20k last man standing freeroll starts in 5 minutes and has 32 people registered, I can't imagine cashing 4 sundays in a row is that hard... even if we only get 100 runners that's still pretty great value

  • I'm still here, playing a bit. I have a lot on my plate right now but I'm hoping to come back and set some new goals that lets me bring some more positivity back into my game, I was getting a bit frustrated by falling short of big top3 finishes in a lot of spots towards the end when I last posted a lot. Here's some bounty craziness that I felt like gambling up, i flatted pre since I wasn't really worried about getting 3 bet since I was planning on getting it in vs the original raiser if he got it in, he was the only player on the table that I still covered

  • Herocall for all the chips. Looks like I'll get another shot to play a final sattelite for a tournament I'm already registered to playing (prague) this sunday

(Software gives the wrong sizing tho pre leaving out the BB, I made it 3.5BB over a limp)

I'm not thrilled having a jack and I'd much prefer snapping AQ, but I decided to go with this one based on the sheer number of bluffs that didn't hit

Poker hand played on Full Tilt Poker with a pot size of $225,160 - Pokerhand.org

  • hmm, I just busted a pretty good omaha stack close to a final table. The board was something like 10852 with irrelevant suits, river was a 4 and I ended up stacking off with 36 thinking I made the nuts.

It's interesting because I had never realised a single card could complete 3 different straights at once. Just one of those things I had probably seen a lot of times without even thinking about before it hit me in the face
  • We are running a big random bluff at the bubbla of the final table. the bet on the turn is spewy but once I do decide to pressure the turn without equity that river is pretty perfect for me because I make a bunch of nutted hands with flushes, 66 and 77 so it should at least be tricky for him to call one pair type hands. All in all I don't like my turn bet but after that I don't hate just running it

Poker hand played on Full Tilt Poker with a pot size of $4,109,109 - Pokerhand.org

Also, I just made the final table of an 11 dollar freezeout with 714 runners and a bit of an overlay

edit: lost an almost 9 million chip pot set over set 44 v 88 on a T84dd flop, down to like 7 bigs.

    FInished 5th for 300 dollars
  • Today we have some fun stuff going, playing a qualifying series for party 5k online event. cent qualifier to 5 dollar qualifier to 22 dollar qualifier to 100 dollar qualifier.

Currently sitting with 1.1 million chips in the 100 dollar qualifier which is roughly 2x starting stack for the final qualifier and about 1000 dollars in equity. On top of this I will also be playing a final qualifier for nordics prague again worth 250 dollars.

On top of this we also have some money goals to chase, the goal is to make enough money to play a 550 euro and a 275 euro side event in prague, also maybe a few dollars for cg would be nice. I'm feeling optimistic today

Edit: We did it, advancing to the 500 dollar step holding 1,5 million chips and roughly 1,5k$ in equity. We'll be playing both mega sattelites side by side, this is a bit crazy
  • Not running too hot in the 5k qualifier, ran KK into AA against one of the top ranked players on the site, build back up and flipped TT v AQ and lost. Sitting with 770k in the break which is roughly average.

Nordic has been a bit of a roller coaster, all in all I've gone from 250k to 325k so I'll jut pretend it has been going smooth. Time to refocus for next hour

Edit: Ran QQ into KK for another big pot pre, down to 480k, still hope ofc

Doubled nordic to 670k. checkraised A2 from the blinds and got shoved on by A10, my two pairs held vs his aces

Out of the 5k sat the last hand before the break, had a bunch of stabs not work out and final hand I called 23s from the BB for a 3 way flop and check shoved a 1064cc with a straight/fd, got called by queens and didn't hit.

Nordic however is still alive and up to 895k, next hour will be big.

Running really bad in all ins, ran JJ into QQ for a big pot and now JJ < A10s vs a short stack, down to 260k but hanging in there

doubled KQ v A10 to 540k still fighting

Got AA and KK back to back and they tried to bluff me off off my KK with KQ on a 10965 board, we're up to 1,5M again

won several more pots and picked off a 3 barrel bluff. We defended 108o from the BB and called 3barrels after flopping top two even after the turn brought 4 clubs. We're now up to 3.3 million chips

Make that 4,1 million chips, these extra chips are basically worth nothing but I've more or less decided that after last time I played this my approach should be not to shut down after reaching a good stack, because I blinded down super bad last time I did that and felt crowded as fuck.

Make that 4,6 million, it's so ridiculously obvious that people are targetting me because I should be folding more with a big stack, give the some room to bluff and make some well placed calls and they go broke...

Make that 4,8 million, stop...fucking...bluffing me in obvious spots already

Boo, down to 4,1M, called down with top pair vs aces

Break, sitting with 5 million chips. 16 players left 10 packages, no one outside of the top 10 has 1 million chips

Another break, still 4,9 million. 12 left
  • Shipped another 3k$ package. Now I get to chose between selling my seat, playing two start days or giving it to my gf, good times
  • Not a bad problem to have, well done
  • Thank you, feels good!

Question do, do you feel I'm asking too little or a reasonable price if I'm looking to sell the 2200 euro buyin for 1000 euros +10% of possible tournament winnings? I really don't have much of a feel for these things

(ofc no one without a nordic passport would be able to buy it)
  • Sounds awfully low to me. Giving away a lot of equity. Let's see what others say...
  • I rather just do a straight up sell instead of possible winnings, unless it's someone you know well.

Is the second seat also a must play? Or can you convert it to T$ or something?
  • 1000 does seem low . Can you play 2 starting days ? If not try and sell straight up, swapping % with someone you don’t know is pretty risky.
  • playing 2 starting days is one of the options I have yes. I've advertised that I may or may not be selling for this price and it's in a fairly limited swedish facebook group. The thing that worries me about playing 2 days is that if I finish day 1 with 2,5x starting stack or more isn't the second buyin more or less wasted?

I agree that 1000 (1200 euro equity in total) is low, I wasn't sure what to set and I went lower since the satellites seem so juicy but yeah, I'm thinking about asking for 1500 at a local pokerclub that I'll go to this saturday.

Also I just shipped another finals ticket for this sunday with 280 dollars in equity just because fuck yes I run good, it took me two 5 dollar buyins today to ship that ticket
  • You are on a heater Richard, ride it while going is good but remember there is another side to it as I'm sure you know.
  • Yeah for sure, in many ways losing has less of an impact on the rest of your life than winning. Winning has a tendency to absorb my head rather fast if I don't watch out
  • more herocalls, I took down this tournament and once again get to play in the final sattelite next sunday. Coming in with 300k chips
