FPP's - what tourney/satellites do you like to using them for?

New to Stars and wondering what you all like to use your FPP's for? Seems like there are a bazillion tournaments and satellites and I'm not used to this much selection.

  • I suggest sav'em up and playing in some of the great freerolls that you can use them in. Example 4,000 FPP's gets you into a direct entry Super Sat. to the WSOP!!!
  • I usually play limit but use my FPP's for satellite tourney's to (EPT/WPT/WSOP or whatever).
The 20 to 100 FPP buyin's are mostly all-in retardfests but it's cheap entertainment. Seems like better value then 400FPP's for a stress star that you can probably buy at "Buck or Two".
  • The key I think is trying to maximize the monetary value of the FPP.

Check out the items in the FPP store to get a rough idea of the "base" value of FPP. You can get Small Stakes Holdem for 1,500 FPP, which is not a bad deal at all.

In terms of tournaments, the key observation is that the prize structure of most (actually, all that I've seen) FPP tournaments is fixed, and the number of entrants is the variable. This affects the value of your FPP. Fewer entrants is better of course.

The monetary equivalent of FPP can vary widely, anywhere from a couple of dollars per 1,000 FPP, up to nearly $100 per 1,000 FPP. The $10-$30 range per thousand is most typical.

Apart from the usual hardcore "maximize your EV" line of thinking, micro-FPP tourneys can also provide a nice diversion. They're sort of somewhere between a pure freeroll and a real money tourney in the sense that there is usually at least some kind of decent prize to shoot for, but the competition is not world class. They are a great way to practise playing against "wacky" players, which is not only useful in terms of learning the strategy adjustments that need to be made against bad players*, but also a good way to improve your "tilt management".

A couple quick tips for maximizing FPP buy-in value:

-Try to play FPP tournaments at off-peak times. This includes weird times of day, holidays, and for special events (e.g. WSOP) dates farther away from the target event time. (That is, there is generally more demand for sats closer to WSOP time.)

-Generally avoid the FPP sats into other FPP sats. There is typically a pretty substantial FPP house cut in these events. You sometimes lose half your FPP or more in buy-in equivalent playing in these kinds of things. Finding an FPP overlay instead would certainly be sweet, but I've found this to be pretty rare.

*As is one of the main philisophical themes in SSH: Beating bad players is easy--- maximizing your win against such players is the challenge.
  • I've had good success in the 500 FPP 27 person sitngo to get into the $200 sunday tournament. So far I've made it three times and cashed once in the Sunday tourney ($1200). I also chopped once -- I still can't understand why I did that. An estimate in the number of FPPs -- I think it's around 10,000. So I'm up $1300.

    Cheers

  • I've usud them for the 500 FPP satellites to the Sunday $215, but i try to find times when the number of entrants is very low. I generally estimate a cash value on FPP of about $0.01 per point. You'll likely find it to be a good guideline.

I used 1000 FPP for a WSOP satellite recently, in theory with a prize of $14,000 it would require 1400 people to enter for you to be even fair value. The one i entered had something like 350 people only. To me that's the type of overlay i'm looking for. Essentially a $10,000 overlay based on a fair value of a penny a point
  • the one table one to win 215 tourney bucks is good. I guess i only say its good cuz i played it twice in my life and came first both times.

the players were unreal bad though
  • The 1,000 FPP one qualifier sats to the WSOP are great value if there aren't too many entrants. (Under ~400 should do the trick.)

Even 20 minute rounds, so there is loads of play!

Strangely, the 100 FPP -> 1,000 FPP sats seem to be one of the worst uses of FPP, with Stars sucking up well over half the FPP in the prize pool in the few I've looked at so far.

  • Yes I did get them. U get a dealer puck (actually quite good) three little markers one for small blind, one for the big blind and one marked dealer. U get two plastic cut cards and one box (two decks) of playing cards. (Actually quite good quality same ones they offer for a 1000fpp) The chips are the dice chips (have dice around outer edges but do not think they are clay) The chips are not denominated but all have a pokerstars logo gold embossed on them. I like them but are not as good as casino quality chips. As far as value goes it probably is not the best place to spend your points but I just wanted a set and figured what the heck as I got every book they offer.
  • I'm saving all my FPPs for the WCOOP. Also the 1,000fpp to win 10,000fpps are always great value when there is a tournament going on.
