Las Vegas long weekend trip! Need tournament advice!

Hey everyone,

So I have decided to take a last minute trip to Vegas this coming weekend, probably Thursday to Monday and I am trying to look for tournaments for while I am there but was hoping for some advice as well. I come across poker atlas and the only ones so far that I am interested in are at the venetian and the Aria. Are there any other games going on that you know of that are worth checking out, say under $300 buy in each tournament. Don't really care about time of day. Or even any input from anyone who has played any of these games, id appreciate it.

Also where is a good place to play 1/2 and 2/5 no limit on the strip?

Thanks in advance.

  • Not too sure on specific tourneys but the Venetian will have the biggest I think. As for cash, this will sound nuts but I found the best game at Harrahs on my last trip. May have been a lucky table draw but I love how the poker area is right on the casino floor. Venetian would be the go to if you are on the north end. Wynn is full of regs but you can find a good game with enough seat changes.

Make sure you check out Aria, I missed it last time and regret it!

Every trip report from Vegas on here always included how great the Aria daily tourneys are. Don't miss it. I've stayed there last few times I've been down and certainly don't regret it, except when they try and charge me for stuff I haven't touched. But that's a tech issue I understand they're working on.
  • Yah the venetian did have the largest buy ins and field, second was the aria for buy in and field. If i cant find a decent tournament with payout then ill just play some cash. Carddead goes once a year and swears by the Aria, he plays there 20 out of 24 hours in a day. I havnt been there yet but looking forward to either tournament or cash.

Another question is, do they allow headphone at the cash and tournament tables in vegas or no?

    Yes.

  • Yeah +1 PH or Aria. Just park your butt in one place and play there all w/e. Either one you will accumulate some decent comps that you can spend on the way out. Either will have lots of nl action. Both have free wifi.

Fields and cash games at Venetian are waaay down since Adelson took his stand against legalizing online poker.

For dailies I wouldn't do anything other than Aria or Venetian.....but maybe add PH, as they are the new Caesars.
  • Looks like im going to have to play the $565 PH series. Hopefully I can cash in some of the venetian and aria dailies prior to the third flight of the PH tournament and freeroll into that one for a bigger pot. Or start grinding some cash games to cover those costs. Im not really interested in the heads up game, though it would be an interesting tournament to try, but seeing that I only have 4 days I gotta pick the tournaments with best returns in mind. The $125 + $25 bounty looks like an option if I dont make day 2, but I am just not sure how many tables and players are expected or how many seats they are running for that tournament. Is it worth it to play over the aria's 100 seat tourney.

Do Arias daily tournaments usually fill up? It says 100 seats, but I would be a little disappointed if it ran and only had 40.

Also looks like ill be staying at excaliber, its our usual cheap hotel thats not circus circus or Imperial Palace. That said, will I really earn any comps just from playing poker, or do they mostly come from table games and slots?

Im hoping to have some comps for my room by the end of stay, as I already have thursday comped and decent rates on the remainder of the stay, but hey if I can get away half price or less ill be pretty happy.

    thoughts?
  • Excalibur is all pokertek tables, don't worry about comps at all just play (or stay) somewhere else.

Last time I played at excalibur it was still live dealers (last day of it actually!) and they were pretty generous with the dinner voucher - but you obviously aren't travelling 3000km to play @ woodbine :)
  • I wasn't planning on playing any poker actually AT Excalibur, however, doesn't the Mlife card track you at all MGM properties and can redeem the comps at any property as well. Basically my plan was to play at Aria the most, and then use those comps back at Excalibur, doesn't that work? Or does it all have to be at Excalibur?

Also, on a side note, would anyone be interested in a bap while I am down there? All prices would be 1:1 no mark up and based on conversion paid on the money used.

I still have some bap money I need to use up from bills game, Im on a winning note there anyways, so I think it would be best to use that seperatly here in canada, and a seperate one in vegas. Any interest?
  • I am not too familiar with Mlife so someone else will need to chime in, but as I remember it you cant.

    From a 2+2 thread:
Mlife poker comps only apply to the casino you are playing in. so for example if you play 4 hours at two properties your comps could not be combined at the second property to get a food voucher.
  • Well thats super shitty, guess the best I can hope for is some free meals at the Aria and maybe some winning blackjack sessions at Excalibur for a free room.

When did they go back to pokertek?

Unless you don't know they dumped the pokertek tables after about a year and put regular tables back in over 2 years ago.

Aria comps $1/hr and $2/hr in the mornings. Google bravopokerlive to see what each room offers.

However, poker room comps are not shared on the mlife card. You have to spend them where you earn them and you usually have to ask for a comp to be printed at the poker room (hellooooo 1995?). Comps for table games and slots are shared. mlife does not give you credit for sports bets either.

Totalrewards comps earned are good anywhere, even Canada to US. Most TR rooms comp $1/hr. Any money spent in their casinos earns comps, gift shop, sports book, restaurants. Also the TR card gives discounts in many restaurants, even ones you might not think, like Le Burger Brasserie, so always ask if the restaurant takes the TR card.
  • Thanks moose, I will keep that in mind, so basically like I said above, the Aria I will try to get lunches or dinners out of, and then the blackjack at Excalibur and try to get as many comps as possible that way.

Used to be $2/hr. Has this changed recently?

Oh wow, good shit. I didn't hit the south end at all on the last trip, had no idea they took them out. Like I said I was there on the last day before it went digital, the dealers were obviously pretty upset about it so I remember it well.

Another oddball suggestion... but seriously... If you want 1/2, play that live game at the excalibur. I have never seen such an inordinate amount of people willing to stack off with top pair as in that game. My theory at the time was that it was all parents trying to sneak in an hour of hold em before they go back to their "vacation". That was years ago mind you, but its still the "family friendly" destination!
  • That is a good suggestion Bfill.... I will consider that for sure, also I just looked and the Aria only has a 1/3 game anyways. I will see when I get down there. BTW Bap coming soon if there is interest. ANy suggestions on games to play now as I just called both the Aria and the Venetian and I am thinking about which games to play now.

So Aria says their thursday and friday games at 12pm have an average turnout of 100 players. The buyin is $125 but only $97 goes to prize pool. so the average prize pool on these games is $9700. Their 7pm games have a turnout of 60-80 players. Therefore those games have a prizepool of $5820-$7760.

The Venetian Thurs game at 12pm is $150 with $119 going to the prizepool, and with the numbers going down, I was told they put in a 10k guarantee. Their 7 pm game is a $200 buy in with $161 going to the pot and also a 10k guarantee.

The friday games at the Aria are the exact same as above, but the venetian games are both $200 a piece 12pm one being a $50 bounty and the 7pm being a regular freezeout, but this time on the friday both games are $20k guarantee now.

I cant decide which games to play, what do you all think, what makes most sense and bang for the buck? I am thinking friday the venetian games for $20k make most sense but I can't decide on thursday.

The saturday I should be playing the $565 planet hollywood day 1c.

Sunday hopefully will be the day 2 of above, or i will play the Planet Hollywood $150/$25 bounty game.

    Suggestions?
  • Used to be $2/hr. Has this changed recently?

Sorry $2 and $3 in the mornings.

Orly? Bravopoker shows 4 tables of 2/5 ATM.

    Go for $20k.

  • I guess I worded it wrong, I meant to say they only have $1/$3 and not $1/2, but yes they do have other games running as well.

Also I think I have figured out my tournament schedule, let me know what you think.

    Thursday - Venetian 12pm $150 $10k Guarantee
    Thursday night *Aria 7pm $125

    Friday - Aria 12pm $125
    Friday night *Venetian 7pm $200 $20k Guarantee

    Saturday - Planet Hollywood 12pm $565 day 1c $500k Guarantee
    Saturday night *Aria $125

    Sunday - Planet Hollywood 12pm $125 $25 bounty

    Thoughts on schedule?
  • Thoughts on schedule?

    only jealousy. looks awesome!
  • hahaha.... we should take a trip to vegas man, total poker degenning, I think carddead would be down as well, almost went with him last winter but schedule was just too busy.

    BAP time for this trip?
  • +1 on cash at Excaliber.. Also cheapo 9am morning turbo tournaments, I won those almost at whim.. My info is 2+ years old but think I cashed in about 5 or 6 in a row of those over 2 or 3 trips.. Great for the early riser while you drink your first coffee, and they don't take much longer maybe 2 - 2 1/2 hours.>:D

    dumb, dumb players.
  • Hopefully the evening tournaments are good and ill need to sleep in during those tournaments, but yah ya never know maybe ill wake up and give em a shot. I think I remember playing one of those a few years ago when I was there as well.

    Actually.......

ARIA comps $2/hr all day and $3 between 4am and 10am.

You don't need to print out your comps - they take them right off the card, unless you are going outside the room to use them.

The food is awesome there. Order off the lemongrass menu if you're in the room, and go next door to Five-Fifty if you want pizza.

But don't go just for comps, it's an action room and you can be up big or down big in a hurry, so the comps are less important. If you want to grind out comps, go play at the Flamingo or TI with the grinders and grind for jackpot hands.

  • I won't be playing just for comps, but if im going to play id like to get as many comps as I can while I am playing. Also, you know your always up for a total degen vegas trip. Lets plan it out this time shall we.
  • So what's the BAP final totals so we know what we're buying in for?
