Cne

Just got my VIP parking pass in the mail from the CNE Casino, which opens up July 28th.

Anyone usually go down?

  • Not anymore. With Woodbine Racetrack's 11 NO-LIMIT tables having opened in Toronto where you can take the TTC right to the front door, the CNE's Limit-only poker room cannot compete against the $5 max rake, no tipping, 50¢/hour cash reward, free drinks, and much less dealer errors. :cool2: I predict that a lot more of the CNE's 28 high-rake tables will be empty, just like what is happening with the underground and Georgian Downs poker rooms since Woodbine opened.
  • I dunno I still think the CNE is gonna be retarded busy as usual. With crazy 4 hour wait times. A lot of the players there are regulars at Port Perry, and Woodbine opening up didn't really hurt the Port Perry poker, so I highly doubt its gonna hurt CNE's crazy annual donkfest.
Most people go there simply for the retarded action; which makes the horrible dealers, expensive food/drinks and gross rake sort of worth it.
  • Not that I have any recent experience, but I highly doubt the CNE poker will be dead
  • Got my letter yesterday in the mail. 2013 going to be another good summer of limit poker at cne. Here a nice pic from the 20 40 game last year that I destroyed

I may give Woodbine a shot one of these days, but I don't know how much I'll like playing electronic tables. I'm a traditionalist and like having cards in my hand and tossing chips around, much the same as how I prefer reading an actual book or newspaper to electronic copy.
  • Did CNE get rid of the 2/5 Limit last year (with hard-to-beat $7.50 max rake)? There are only 5/10+ Limit games again this year. I would think casual players would prefer paying only a $2 big blind at Woodbine than $5 at CNE.

I thought the same way of online/electronic poker, ebooks, electronic devices/toys, social media, etc. But resistance is futile for us old-fashioned dinosaurs. Woodbine poker will probably be raking in ~$1 million/year :o so there will be more forumer nights out wanting a piece of that HUGE :fish: pie instead of just micro home games against decent players.

As part of my plan to have even higher ROI/winnings live than online, I was trying to buy an Ed Miller paperback shipped to Canada, but it was so overpriced compared to the many good poker ebooks, so I bought an ebook instead for the first time.
  • Bought? That is -ev.

As far as I know CNE has never had 2/5 limit. Smallest game is 5/10 which has the gross $7.50 rake
  • Yes 5/10 CNE with the very gross $7.50 rake. I have not given Woodbine a shot yet but may very soon.

Meh, I prefer supporting poker authors and buying the book directly from them as opposed to downloading them illegally and joining Russ Hamilton & other poker crooks in hell. >:D I emailed my favourite author, Ed Miller, and he was nice enough to accept my win-win offer of buying his paperbacks directly from him. When you and compuease invent the next-generation poker software, I will also pay you for your intellectual property.

Now if only I can find the time to finish reading any of my poker books....
  • Just got back from CNE today. Played a short session. Mini-Trip report coming:

So I got a letter in the mail which I thought was my VIP pass, so I the plan today was to pick up my pass and just say hi to a few buddies. I wasn't planning on playing much really. So I got there and they tell me the letter I got was a Re-Qualify letter, meaning I could play 3 hours and get a VIP pass. I thought it was pretty shady of them to make a letter look like the regular VIP letter. I mean, if they wanted to advertise that the CNE was opening, then just send a regular ad. Don't disguise it, so it gets people to come down to play in your mega house advantage casino and your high raked games.

So I decided, maybe I'll play a bit. Put my name down, and had to wait about 2 hours to get on a game. Pretty much the usual crap that takes me a long time to sit down on a game. ie. I watched like 3-4 guys go ahead of everyone because they were friends with the guy running the list. Then they spend like 5-10 mins calling a name, when there's a table number beside their name that indicates what table they are sitting at (it's much faster to just use the radio and ask one of the supervisors to ask the player if they want the game or not).

I actually did end up playing 3 hours, although you can easily sit down at the poker table, ask the guy to rate you, then pick up and leave and come back in 3 hours to claim your VIP pass, since they don't monitor you.

Overall my impression, place seems better run compared to previous years. Cell phones can be used just standing away from the table (not like before where you had to go outside the poker room). Game quality definitely worse action. I mean the 20/40 and 25/50 games were full of GBH and BCC regs. Everyone knows how to play now, those 10BB/hr sessions are all gone. 10/20 and lower games probably have the best action now. Or maybe it was just because it was a weekday today.

Rake has been lowered kind of. It's 10% now, but 5/10 is $6 max, 10/20 is $8 max, 15/30 is $9 max, 20/40 is $10 max, and 25/50 is $11 max.

Waiting around for a game sucks, since you can't sit at empty gaming tables. Only at the food area, but over there you can't hear the names they are calling very clearly. Positive note, you can bring your own food, lots of guys were bringing in takeout from downtown in to eat.
  • How does one go about obtaining a VIP pass for the CNE? I'd love to go more often but not at $16 a pop.
  • You already asked this same question elsewhere & got the answer, & Popkorn also gave the details in his post.

  • CNE games: you have always had to go early to avoid long wait times.

I find it funny that everyone thinks regs are hardly beatable.

I can't speak specifically to the CNE but the regs today are much different than the regs of 5 years ago. Way less spew now.. Even Vegas and AC are much tougher than they were from my experience, not saying unbeatable but way less profitable.
  • Probably true.

No one said regs are hardly beatable. It's just logical to me to want to sit down at tables that are softer. The softer the tables the more likely a session will be profitable, no?

Table selection is extremely important...but sometimes the softest tables are the ones with regs;)

    Very true!

Regs are definitely beatable, if you want a standard 1bb/hr win rate. Like I mentioned before, I like having 10bb/hr win rates like the old days (yes I'm spoiled :) ), it was win rates like those that attracted me to poker in the beginning.

And this sums it up.. When you are table selecting choose the table with few regs but mostly casual (Hopefully drinking) players out for a good time.. These tables were easy to find years ago but now are much rarer.

Still very possible from the stories I've heard already.

10bb/h winrates in LHE are not sustainable in any game other than one where you are physically lifting the table and sliding the chips towards you, gathering them up and going home.

    Just sayin'.

In live poker you have to play way more hours than are available at The Ex each year (for a casual player) to obtain a meaningful rate. Not saying the games weren't super soft (I played in some of those games and can verify how good they were), but you were also running good. $200/h at 10/20 ain't gonna happen long term.

I have a friend that didn't have a losing session at 10/20 2 years ago and then broke even last year. The games weren't any tougher (according to him), but the rivers were much less kind.

When there is a table number beside the name, it just means they are sitting at that limit (ex: table 80s are usually 20-40s, table 74-79 usually means they are at 10-20s and 59-whatever means they are at 5-10s) thats why you usually get a lot of names with the same table numbers.
We might remember some regulars but it is impossible for us to keep track of players inside when they are constantly moving to different tables

I gather you worked at the ex? Stick around and participate, it is always nice to converse with someone involved in running games.. Are you a dealer, floor, etc?
  • sure, im a poker dealer there
ask me anything and hopefully I can answer without getting into trouble
  • What do you know about the CNE tournaments next summer and their approval status?

Unfortunately, I have no idea, CNE doesn't like to tell us (dealers) anything until the last minute, I only find out about the increase (10%) rake for this year when I went back to do my table test.

But I have heard rumours that the tables will be outside where the charity pit is located at, entry fee will be like $100? they might get pokerstars involve? and payout will be 50% to winner, 25% to house, 25% to the main final prize pool, again...all rumours so hopefully you sign up for the email newsletter for more information
  • If anyone will not be using their entrance and parking pass for the CNE, I would be willing to purchase it from you.

    Thanks!
  • What time does the CNE poker room open M - F?
