Bristol St. Classic XIII - Results!

Here are the results of the recently completed Bristol Street Classic XIII. 25 players competed for a prize pool worth tens of dollars. This was the first tournament held with a double re-buy; it seemed to loosen up play and bumped up the prize pool a bit. It seemed to be popular with those playing, so this may be a contined change. Let me know if it should be.

In addition, we also allowed people on the waiting list to step in if a player chose not to re-buy or if he used up all his available re-buys. I don't think people had a problem with this change of the rules, but if you have concerns, let me know!

The theme of the tournament seemed to be going in with the worst of it and coming out ahead!

My tournament play was uneventful. A quick re-buy, followed by a quick double-up, followed by going card dead for the next while. I eventually entered a three-way all in AQ(me) v 66 (Kevin F) v KJ. The flop came QTT and running diamonds gave the pair of sixes the flush. Argh. Kevin F would then go on, three hands later to triple up again (again, as a massive dog) to become the chip leader entering the final table.

As the last break began, 4 simultainious eliminations reduced the field from 12 to 8, and the final table was formed.

Anyway, on to the...

FINAL TABLE

Seat 1: Kevin F (10,800)
Seat 2: "Big Daddy" Paul W. (2,300)
Seat 3: "Dirty Whore" Mark B. (8,000)
Seat 4: "8-Ball" Tye Z. (5,000)
Seat 5: "Duggy" Ryan (10,000)
Seat 6: "Lamb of" Johnny A. (3,400)
Seat 7: Xiao L. (3,900)
Seat 8: Jackie (5,700)

8th Place: "Big Daddy" Paul W.

Coming to the table as the short stack, with 6BB's left, Paul picked his moment to push. His pocket 5's were called by Mark B's A5, and the board double paired with QQ's and 77's giving Mark the Ace-high kicker.

7th Place: "8-Ball" Tye Z.

Playing well to make it to the final table, Tye raised with A3, only to run into AT pre-flop. No help for either player and Tye ended a good run in 7th place.

6th Place: Jackie (Bubble-girl)

The only female at Bristol Street that night started off using all her re-buy on Table 1, got moved to Table 2 where she proceeded to accumulate a massive stack, then came back to the final table in good chip position. Jackie ran into un ugly flop with a pair of fours but correctly called Johnny's bluff holding T8 giving him ten-high. Sadly, the turn brought the 8 and ended Jackie's excellent run. Good game, bubble-girl!

5th Place: Xiao L. ($25)
4th Place: "Dirty Whore" Mark B. ($50)

Xiao as the short stack, but himself all in, getting called by both Mark and Johnny. The Board came AT3, Johnny bet out and Mark called. The turn came another 3 giving Xiao Trips 3 and was ahead! Both Johnny and Mark checked it, ane the river came a second T giving Johnny 10's full. Johnny moved in, and Mark, convinced he'd be splitting the pot with Mark called and knocked himself out when we ran into the monster. This also knocked out Xiao as the T on the river gave Johnny a better boat. Great game!

3rd Place: "Duggy" Ryan ($75)

Along the way the finish, Johnny trapped Kevin with a full house releaving him of all but 2BB of his big stack making Johnny a monster. Johnny then proceed to double up Kevin twice in a row and the stacks were fairly close.

Ryan put in the rest of his chips with K9h and was called by K8d. The fact that Ryan's hand was dominating should have been a warning sign in this tournament as the 8 came on the turn and sent Ryan to the rail.

HEADS-UP

Johhny: ~$28,000
Kevin: ~$21,000

Johnny was slightly ahead in chips and there was talk of a chop but none was taken. Both competitors wanted the un-tainted win too badly and a heated battle began between these two.

A fierce back and forth battle began and ended at midnight sharp with the following hand

Kevin: K2o
Johnny: AJs

Standard raise by 4,000 was called by Kevin and the flop came 742. Johnny moved all-in and was quickly called by Kevin who was ahead with the pair of twos. Both stacks were fairly even so this would either eliminate or cripple one player.

In Bristol Street XIII fashion, the player ahead was the one eliminated as both an Ace and Jack appeared on the Turn and River, given "Lamb of" Johnny the win, $215 bucks and the title of "Bristol Street Classic XIII Champion". Kevin walked away in second place with $125. Congrats to both players on a great tournament!

Feel free to share your own personal "Bad Beat" (or otherwise) stories below. There were enough of them!!

** This was a four person elimination on two different tables, so I didn't have an accurate chip count.
  • Thanks, Rob, for a fantastic tournament. It was well run, organized and a lot of fun.

The theme was definitely about going in with the worst and coming out ahead. Except when I went out. I went in with the worst and lost. Go figure.

I am looking forward to the next event.

Congrats to Johnny on a well played night.
  • Another great tourney Rob!!!!!
I'd like to raise my glass and give a toast to K-Ws best low limit Casino!!!

Congrats of Johnny and "RiverRider" Kevin!!!

  • yeah it was my first Bristol event! it was fun even though i didnt last an hour, damn bad beats! but oh well i had fun and i will definitly be out for the next one
  • It sure was fun rob. Thanks again for holding it.

At the first break, i was the chip leader. Many comments were heard around the tables "he can just sail to the final table". i would liek to point out that i was second from short stack sitting at the final table.

i was trying my best to play a tight agressive game, but found myself bleeding chips with junk hands like J9o and 8Q0. i woudl take stabs at pots at all the wrong times. making my standard 250 raise with blinds at 75/150, and then running in to all-in's i just coudlnt call. And other times making the most rediculous "Big-stack" calls to effectively double up Ryan giving him the momentum to hit the final table running.

Once i hit the final table though, i didnt once put all my chips at risk. No short stack all-ins to be called with coin flips. i tried my best to only make calls i thought woudl be a benifit for my stack. i felt that jackie was weak and proceded to push her out of a pot that was very intense. calling every big bet i made, and eventually folding once the river hit and I made a big over bet. The only stone cold bluff i think i made all night. that might sound strange to anyone who knows my style. It was luck that my aggression paid off at the final table.

i certainly cant wait for tysons place on saturday. Who else thinks i have a big bullseye on my forehead??

thanks again rob, and thanks to everyone who played last night. even without a win i think i would still have had an amazing time with a great group of people.

    Thanks,
    johnny

P.S. i woudl also like to note that before carnage insued at the final table, all the players agreed that first and second woudl each throw in a bit of money to the guy who offered to curtesy deal. Thanks for that John.
  • Rob, again you set the standard that we all have to live up to! Great Job

Wait could that because you played some junk that got you huge?!!!

It paid off on the early tables too. It was a pain in the ass having you first to my left. It cause me to play WAY looser then usual, I tried to play your game instead of mine and paid for it.

You definetly outplayed me, and I am looking forward to playing you again.

Wait I invited YOU?
  • No, thank you !!!!
  • Amazing as always, Rob. Even though I came up a bit short, it was a lot of fun.

Count me as being in favor of the two rebuys. I liked the loose play early, even though I couldn't take advantage of it :). I look forward to the next one!

  • Rob, thanks for having me. Excellent blind structure, very well organized, great tournament. In saying all of that, I did not have a lot of fun. After 5 or 6 straight top 3 finishes I got to expect that I was the one to beat and that I will make money. My last three times I was at Rob's my quote to Kate upon leaving the house was "I'll be back a richer man." I was right each time. I wasn't last night. It's unrealistic to think you can money every time you go out to a tournament, it is a goal though. An unrealistic one but nevertheless, a goal.

Two things came to mind after this tournament that bothered me, possibly bother me enough to will the cards against me.

First thing: I'm not in this hand but I'm at the table. Early on in the tournament a player raises either the minimum or 2x the blind in late postion. He gets one caller, the BB. Flop comes down 8 7 x. BB check raises the LP raiser and he folds disgruntily. BB shows 7:diamond: 8:club:. LP goes off for about 10 minutes upset about how the BB called with garbage when he had...wait for it...wait....its coming A:spade: 3:club:! A monster!! I am pretty sure the guys knew eachother and it might have been some friendly ribbing but it didn't feel like it was. I had nothing to say other then some thoughts in my head that I wanted to tuck away for later. Thoughts about how some people over value hands and how others fall in love with certain card combinations because they cracked aces with them once 6 months ago. Anyway...throw that info in the vault for later. This alone is not enough to bother me, I'm not that crazy.

Second thing: (You might recognize this)

"the problem with making bets that look like they want to get called, is that they usually do."

I raise 4x the big with pocket kings K:diamond: K:club: UTG. Dude to my left instantly calls, as does the guy on his left as does the Small Blind. 4 Players and I've got cowboys: My Bristol Street Nemesis. I should have just went all-in and stole the blinds. Flop Q:heart: J:heart: 4:heart: Small bets out, I raise (small instantly calls out "I'm all in", out of turn!). Dude to my left calls my bet as does the guy on his left. Small, as previously stated goes all-in! *pause* Now we are in the re-buy period and I have 2 out of the 3 guys remaining in this pot covered, I have seen players chase their A-high flush. I have seen players go Allin with top pair top kicker. Maybe these two other guys didn't trust the Small when he said "all-in" out of turn. Ok, I call his all-in and wait for the other  to arrive so I can salvage the other half of my stack. *unpause* I call as does the dude to my left as does his friend to his left. Geez. Turn and river bring no K and no . We are All all-in by the time the river card comes down.

So yeah, brutal play by me or great play? Brutal. Easy answer I know. Small has T:heart: T:spade: for a pair of tens. Guy two to my left has Q:spade: J:spade: for two pair ("he be-ut me, pay heem). But wait, one more guy. Dude to my left flips over A:heart: 3:heart: for the nuts. I don't say anything but shake my head in disgust. Not in disgust at the calls or anything like that just disgust in general. My Kings have been busted sooooo many times there and I just couldn't believe the cards I was getting busted.

Well the guy with A:heart: 3:heart: starts talking to the rest of the table, he's pretty proud of himself. "Did you see the way I played that? I let everyone else bet and just sat around until everyone was all-in and took the chips with the flopped nuts!". Now here's the kicker, this is the same guy that ripped the other guy for calling with 78 offsuit. I pipe up, "you called a 4x raise in this position with A3?" Dude says....yeah you know what he said...he said "it was suited". I say "you were just ripping that guy for calling your 2x bet with 78 when you had A3 and you call my 4x out of postion with A3?" I shake my head, actually Im shaking my head now as I write this. He keeps defending his play and I just let it go not being able to correctly calculate the odds in my head of A3off vs 78 off and KK vs A3soooooted and tell him they are equally bad calls. Not taking into consideration, postion, player skill level, raise amount, stack size etc. So I let it go and tell him that I'm going to put a bad beat on him later in the tournament when it matters. However I do not do this, I rarely do put bad beats on people for some reason  .

Well, these two events bothered me enough to will the cards against me. The cards first said, "hey we feel bad about that, we'll triple you up with JJ". I was comfortable after the re-buy period, likely average or better. Here is the hand that did it to me.

Kevin F (finished 2nd) limps in from MP. Now some history here, I had bluffed Kevin out of a huge pot early on when he had AK and I had Q8. I told him I had nothing during the break and I'm sure he put it in his vault. I knew the next time I was all-in I would get called. Ok, so Kev limps and its folded to me in the Big. I've got QT. Flop Q T 5 rainbow. I check and he bets out 1/5 of his stack. I raise all in, I have him covered by about another 1200. He immediately calls me with KT. Yes, he hit a K on the RIVER. I got what I wanted, him to call me when he thought I was bluffing. Crap.

Well, hope I didnt offend anyone by this longg post. It's all behind us now. My only point was don't complain about the poor play of others if you yourself are going to make equally poor plays, just let it be. I feel better now. Lets play.

  • One more thing. Congrats to Johnny, Kevin, Ryan "The apprentice Duggy" and Mark Drtyore. I know all of these guys and have discussed poker at length with 3 of them (not Kevin). Again, not surprised that they all made the top 4 spots. When you put this much work into something sometimes it pays off. Great results guys!

  • Flop Q J 4 Small bets out, I raise (small instantly calls out "I'm all in", out of turn!).

FYI, that was me. I messed up. For some reason I thought it was just you and I in the pot and I tried to buy the pot. By the time it came back to me and I realised that there were more people in it, I didn't want to act like an asshole and recall my bet. I knew I was done but I could still re-buy and as you said, I was short stack anyway.
I lost track of who was in at that point and if I messed you up because of it, I apologize.

But I have to agree with you on the other plays. They were messed up.

I should really learn my lesson and remember that when I have pocket pairs I only win about 10% of the time. Stupid me. Stupid stupid stupid me.
  • Hey all

For those veterans of BSC, and for the newbies, let me know if you disagree, but I have never seen so many runner-runner miracles in one night.... at one point I opined that given the way things have been going, I'm due a Royal flush any minute.

And Kevin, damn, you are the king River Runner.. . 3times I saw you runner runner... good game though. 8)

As always Rob, excellently run tourney, and STPboy, you mentioned a solid field of players were listed, and it turned out to be a great night of poker <and I lasted more than 1/2 hour!!>

    As I said
"wait, a final table without Rob or Shannon? WTF?"

    Mark

    P.S. I like the 2x rebuys rob

Well, at the end of the day, it's just cards, and one of the great things about poker is that fundamentally, there is almost never a decision that is completely without merit. (there are exceptions, of course) People all the time over value their hands, just like people all the time under value them. People make stupid calls and stupid folds. (I have both called big raises with 82o and folded to big raises when I was getting great odds to make the call)

But I agree with your original point that it is bad form to gloat over your great play, or an opponents poor play. Mostly because if you are good, people will know it without you having to tell them. And if they aren't good, why let them in on the secret?

Keep your head up STP, in the long fun, the poker gods seem to give better hands to the better players, and you're one of the solid ones.
