Chip Set Breakdown . . .

Is it possible to have a non-denominated set of Hotstamped chips do double duty for cash and tournament play? I have an idea in mind for a hot-stamp image, and if I can get the numbers to work, I may just buy my LAST set of chips. I am thinking of four colours, five if necessary . . . but I have never been very good at breakdowns. Just looking for a 1 table set, as I have other sets that can handle multi-table games.

Thoughts?

  • Of course.....pick the colors you like and go for it. Check out homepokertourneydotcom for a great breakdown spreadsheet. Oh and never say it's your last set!
  • Starting stack first.

Next decide if you want the 25/100 to be 8/8 12/12 or 8/13

    The rest fills in itself.

For 1 table sngs I usually go 4k or 5k and 12/12/5 or 12/12/7 but 8/8/8 (8/8/10) has a nice symmetry as well (and would be considered extremely lucky by your Asian players). ;)

    Cash game is different.

Need starting buy in and limits first.
  • If they are non denominated, what do the buy-ins matter?

    Probably $0.10/$0.25 . . . more likely $0.25/$0.50.
  • Because it determines the quantities of chips you need to give out? WTF?
  • Yeah yeah . . . that hit me about 10 seconds after I hit post . . . this is why I come to you guys, though. This way, I don't HAVE to think.

So lets say a $0.25/$0.50 cash game. Buy-in is min. $20.00 - max. $60.00. Do you think I would be better off using a "$20.00" chip instead of the more traditional $25.00?
  • Okay so this will be more chips than absolutely necessary, but should allow me to do a 10k Stack 1 table SnG, AND a $0.25/$0.50 cash game ($60.00 max buy-in).

    Let me have it . . .

175 "Greens" (either T25, or Quarters)
250 "Blacks" (either T100, or Dollars)
150 "Yellows" (either T500, or Fives)
125 "Purples" (either T1000, or Twenties)

    10k starting stack would be 12, 12, 7, and 5
    $60.00 buy-in would be 12, 12, 5, 1 or maybe 16, 16, 4, 1.

I would use the excess "Twenties" and "Fives" for re-buys.
  • what kind of hot stamps are you getting?
  • It looks decent. Purples should be 500 and Yellows 1000. Also flip the quantities. If you have 1000 on the table it will be used much more often than 500 so better to have more of those on the table rather than less. 12/12/5/6 is better.

    In a $60 max game $20s>>>>>>>>>>$25s.

However, the $1 will be your workhorse. Avoid 4 denoms until rebuys It will either make the players tighten up, not wanting to break the $20 or shove because they feel like they don't have a lot of chips and the stacks really aren't deep enough for the big stack to be making change for $20s.

I would give out 8/18/8. (if you really want 120 quarters on the table then give out 12/16/8)
Rebuys I would give out 8/3/3/2 until you have 100 quarters on the table. It seems about the sweet spot. (or 0/5/3/2)

So you can change your quantities to
    greens 120 - 25/$25
    blacks 280 - 100/$1
    purples 100 - 500/$20
    yellows 200 - 1000/$5
    700 chips still

    Cash bank $30+$280+$2000+$1000 = $3310
  • Don't use blacks as$1 chips imo
  • Not married to the colour combinations, just using standard colours to make the imagery easier (green 25s, etc.) Only requirement is that they MUST look good with a silver stamp, as that is what I want. As for what the stamp will be, it is a design my daughter came up with in art class last year. I am having a local artist take her idea, that she carved into a piece of drywall, and make it a little cleaner and more symmetrical. If it looks as good as I think it might . . . voila: Hot Stamp pattern. And yes, I will post a pic when I get it back from the artist.
  • Black $1s rock.

  • Silver hotstamps rock. Charcoal (not black) but close enough.

  • Having played with those GCRs, I will stipulate to the awesomeness of the colours. So maybe a Dk. Green for the Quarters, Charcoal for Dollars, Lavender/Yellow for the Fives, and Dayglo Orange for the Twenties. Think I might order a sample set of colours from Pokerchipsonline, just to be certain.
  • Just be aware the dayglo colours from ASM are lighter. ie get all dayglo or don't get dayglo.
  • Use Standard Colours:

I would suggest using standard colours so that when you go to a casino you will be less likely to make mistakes.

    $1 White (sometimes blue)
    $5 Red ALWAYS
    $25 Green Always
    $100 Black
    $500 Purple

Get a big set of chips:

It's much nicer to have more chips than you need.
The less time people spend making change the better!
It makes the game run faster and better if you have more small chips than you need.

Having more chips is more fun!

If you're short on chips I'd use $20 bills for $20 and have extra $5/$1/$0.25 chips. Also you can use china clays for the $0.25 chips and spend your money on more of the $1 and $5 chips. Then when you get more chip money you can upgrade your set easily.

If this is your last set. I'd consider getting plaques for the highest denominations and over sized chips for the 2nd highest chips.

    Last piece of advice.

Don't buy non-awesome chips. If you do you'll just end up ditching them and buying another better set. Buy the set of your dreams. Even if you have to buy fewer chips and use $20 bills for $20 for a few months you'll be glad you got the chips you want.

For example, if you can only afford 300 awesome chips, use (dice/china clay) chips as the $0.25 and $20 bills as $20 rather than buying 700 chips that you'll want to upgrade later.

Yeah, I know the ideas presented here contradict each other but I never said these decisions are easy.

This will not be an issue for me . . .

I have thought about an oversized chip for the $20.00s, but I am not a fan of plaques.

Do ASM Clay chips qualify as awesome? Probably can afford around 500 chips. Not to worry about bigger sets, as I already have those. this is just a nice little idea for a custom set that I can show off for 1 table SnGs.

See bolded above, and thank you.
