Daniel Negreanu is a star. He's loved by fans, feared by competitors. Last year, he won $4.5M playing Texas Hold'em poker. Not bad for a skinny Toronto kid

LUCK DOESN'T come to you. You go and find it. Daniel Negreanu slips into the Atlantic City resort like he owns the joint. Hustling through the polished revolving door of Harrahs Casino, the Canadian-born high-stakes poker player carries all the luggage he'll really need this business trip -- $100,000 in cash stuffed not so neatly in a plain brown envelope, tucked clumsily under one arm.

The small fortune -- 20 stacks of $100 bills -- could just as easily be his lunch, the way he's now lugging it to work.

  • Great article... love the part about him explaining to his girlfriend's ultra-conservative parents exactly what it is that he does for a living.
  • Was a good article ... i ironically read it while eating dinner after a night of playing poker at one of those 'underground clubs' daniel was talking about :)
  • I have no doubt in my mind daniel is one of the best poker players of today, but i just cant get past the "character" he has made himself to be in front of the cameras.

In the episode of the WPT called ladies night, he was there to support his friend. but instead of cheering liek every other audience member, he flew off the handle and made an ass of himself. cheering like a loud maniac every time evelyn pulled in a pot was an inconsiderit display of his love for attention.

danny may be a great poker player, but a star is isnt. a star woudlnt have tried to steal the lime light from a friend on one of the most outstanding nights of her career.

    thanks,
    johnny
  • I have been hearing so much about how pros treat poker like a business and meticulously manage their bankroll..........but (there's always a but) does anyone really believe that he walks around with 100G's in his pockets and according to the articles pretty much blows his nose and wipes his ass with them all the time.
First of all. Don't you think that he would have some very high limit credit card or certified cheques or something. They make it sound like all his cash is sitting in his lunch bag underneath his veggie sandwich. If it's true it doesn't seem wise, he should get a couple of bodyguards ASAP.

I didn't really mind the cheering. Let's face it, if you were there in the audience and someone you considered to be a close friend was kicking ass at a WPT final table, you'd probably lose it too. The difference is that the WPT producers cut in waaaaaay to many shots of Daniel celebrating, either on his own or in the background of a shot. Basically, they thought: 'hey, this is cool, we have a WPT pro in the audience who's really into this game'. And then, as is often the case with a good thing, they milked the life out of it until it was almost painful to watch.

A bigger problem I had with this episode was that Jennifer H. seemed to be consulting Daniel for advice during the tournament. Not during hands, mind you, but during the tournament nonetheless. Bizarre.

Me neither. Also, I've heard (not sure though) that a lot of (or possibly all?) of the shots of the audience are taped away from the actual tournament.

Probably the producers/directors thought it would be cool to overemphasize Daniel's cheering for her after showing the segment about how competitive they were with each other.

AFAIK, this is allowed in tournaments, isn't it?

That's true... they do pick up cutaways of generic clapping/cheering/groaning before the event starts to help them out if they edit themselves into a corner. But I think that those shots of Daniel were too genuine, too varied, and too frequent to have been staged beforehand.

That may very well be the reason, but us poker players are an observant bunch. We don't need to be hit over the head with the whole 'Daniel is cheering for Jennifer' theme, especially if they milk it to the point of ridiculousness.

Probably. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.
  • Nice article!
  • yeah woke up yesterday and saw that article in the paper was thoroughly impressed with the 4 page spread, although i do agree with the fact that if he is really carrying that kind of money around he should invest in a bodyguard ASAP! lol
and yes daniel has been known as an ass in the past, and he will openly admit that (check his latest journal entry at fullcontactpoker.com) but generally i think he is a great ambassador for uor country and the game of poker.
