WTB: Cash Set

I'm looking for a decent cash set for stakes .50/1 to 1/2. Right now I have the suited chips, maybe not quite as bad as dice chips but pretty much the same thing.

I have a budget of about $500. I'd like Paulsons but I think they are slightly above my budget.

I know some of you are chip aficionados. I'd love some advice on what to get, or if someone has a ready made set for sale, that'd be good too.

  • The sale is over but you can email jim@thechiproom.com and see what he has left.

You can easily put together a 600 piece Paulson set for under $500. The .50s might be all gone but you could get some of the roulettes. At .18ea they would serve for now.
  • You can also go with a set of Dunes or Pharaoh's as well, for about $.32 each. Neither are Paulsons, but both are excellent quality that's hard to beat and easily comparable to any Paulson out there.

BEWARE. Chip buying is addictive. Before you know it, you'll be wanting to build blackjack and craps tables and ordering custom poker table cloths!
  • Looking at this set. Buddy said I could pick up for $500.

Would like opinions, please. Good deal, bad deal, worth the money, etc. Been reading on chiptalk alot about July 4th sale and thinking maybe I should wait to see that?
  • Only chip I really liked out of that set was the $5.00 chip. Also, I am not a fan of $20.00 chips. Utilizing quarters and dollar chips, the natural progression would seem to be a $25.00 chip instead, but that is just me. Moose has made a good suggestion, as has AJ. Both he and I have the Pharoah's, and they are a great chip. I will, eventually be getting a set of Roulettes as a tourney set. You cannot go wrong with $0.18 per chip for Paulson's. Wifey has soe of the Empress roulettes Moose is talking about, and they are nice, once you clean and oil them.
  • Where's your pics BTW milo? C'mon buddy, roll out the pron.

As for THOSE chips it's a steal at that price. Those were custom made BCC chips, which were quite expensive - $1.25 to $1.50ish per. It would be tough to get more however, so make sure it's the breakdown you want. Not a lot of $5s for the stakes you want but I guess there is $1600 in 20s which would see the felt a fair bit. I love the $20s. Oversize, no mold. Beauties. You can do a set of casino Paulson's for cheaper, although it could be hard to get quarters. $.50's are fairly easy to get however.

The Jul 4 sale seems to mostly have chipco ceramics or bud jones. I don't like bud jones. I do like ceramics but some people don't. Worn casino ceramics kinda suck but the Hooters was only open for less than a year so they should be ok.
  • They aren't mine, they're the wife's . . . talk to her.
  • Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice so far.

I've been negotiating with the guy, since I also prefer a $25 chip to the $20, and he's offered to sell me the quarters, dollars, and fins, for $350, including racks. That's 600 chips total but I'd need to get some $25's later. He said some were made for this set so I could put up an ad for them later.

I'm thinking I might pull the trigger on it. Just need some reassurance I guess that I'm not getting ripped off.

    Thanks again.

Edit...I accepted the deal. Will be picking them up tomorrow.
  • take the 20s. seriously. they are the most valuable in the set. just look at all the people in the ad trying to get just the 20s.

Yeah? Ok, I'll email the guy back.
  • The set is not much good without the high denoms anyways and if you can't find 25s then the set is no good.
  • So, it'd be difficult to find the $25s, you think?
  • This is the original group buy.

You can see only 8000 of these were made and about 8 people bought sets. Monkeydog was not one of those, so who knows which person he bought his chips from. I also don't know out of those, how many 25s were made. So it's a pretty exclusive set. That's why I said you have to like the breakdown because it would be tough to get more and even if you do, it is likely you would have to buy someone else's entire set just to get the 25s, then you are left with chips you don't want and so on. Looks like the original price was about $1.25 per, so as I said, if these are the chips you want, it's a great price. Someone took a huge loss on these at some point. The 20s were probably more like $2 or more ea and would be even rarer.

Here I found the $20 group buy.

Looks like only 930 of these were made, so 80 would be almost 10% of all the chips in existence and I see monkeydog is the original owner of those. Try and get a rack too if he has one, because 50mm racks are hard to find. Took me over 3 years to find one.
  • He says he has no rack for the 20s. But I'm getting the whole set. Driving down on Friday.

Thanks for the advice and the links, Moose.
  • BTW I have bought chips many times from monkeydog. He is a good seller.
