Detroit Vs. Windsor

Heading to Detroit for a weekend to watch the Wings for the first time. Is it better to stay in Windsor or Detroit? On the Windsor side there is Caesar's, while on the Detroit side there is the MGM, Greektown, and Motorcity.

  • Either side will charge you for booze, however if you overnight in Detroit you can bring back $50 duty free. Don't forget to fill up at the duty free gas bar too.

Rooms are a lot cheaper in Detroit.
  • depends whether you are gangsta or not. Detroit can be dangerous, especially with like 20% unemployment in Michigan.
  • either way you lose
  • Yeah, cheaper rooms and duty free booze are an incentive on the American side. I did not know that booze wasn't comped in the American casinos there, which sucks.

"either way you lose"-not true....I'll get to watch the wings play and that is a win in comparison to having to watch the Leafs suck every game.
  • I think each State has their own liquor law about comping booze at Ramblin Gamblin establishments.
  • The booze ain't duty free unless you stay 2 nights.
  • probably more gamblers on the US side. Never played there but if you can get a nice room at one of the casinos, might be the way to go. If you are playing poker, might want to also consider the wait times.

Hey! Some of us live in Windsor! Namely, me. It's not nearly as bad as the horror stories everyone told me. Nice waterfront, small downtown, decent casino, lots of restaurants (even if none of them except McD's are open 24 hours).

    BOO to that.

"probably more gamblers on the US side. Never played there but if you can get a nice room at one of the casinos, might be the way to go. If you are playing poker, might want to also consider the wait times."

I also forgot about the smoke factor in U.S. casinos, which I hate. On 2+2 it seems that MGM and Greektown have smoke free rooms. It also seems that the American casinos have a higher rake (10% up to $6+1 for BBJ).

Cerberus, have you played on the American side? Where would you recommend for 1-2 poker? On 2+2 it seems that the general vibe is that it's been fairly slow at Caesar's Windsor.
  • Windsor was packed last time I went, but that was U.S. Thanksgiving weekend and there were big(ish) concerts. Right now, yeah, pretty slow from the looks of things. Weekends tend to be decently busy though.

Never been to the U.S. casinos so I can't say yay or nay.
  • As it turns out I attempted to play MGM in Detroit and it was a shit show. Many drunks, smokers, and *gangsters*. Lasted one hour in the place and had to leave. The place was crazy from the beginning....starting with a guy being rushed by 10 security guards who was trying to fight a woman in the main entrance when I arrived....

I've been to Vegas and Atlantic City and have never seen anything like this...NEVER again...
