'nother raid in the news

Alba social club in Vaughan this time. Hope nobody we know was involved. And thank you to the forces of good for protecting us from these evil dens of iniquity . . .

I feel so much safer today, than I did yesterday.

  • It does make you wonder. I mean is there nothing out there more important to deal with than this? An organized raid by god knows how many cops on an established game?

That being said did the story mention any connections to any previous incidents/situations/organizations/people that would have lead the police to feel it was time to stick a fork in this game?
  • Only mention that gives it any kind of legitimacy is that they found a "substance" which they believe might be cocaine.

Although I personally could care less what people choose to put in their bodies . . .
  • Heres what I know, and my views have changed over time.

When I first started, I was in the camp of wtf its a poker game, dont you have better things to with our time?

However, the deeper I got into the community, the more I met alot of games runners, and the worse stories Ive heard.

Dont get me wrong, the games are safe and the players are, for the most part, completely innocent. There are also some very straight up club runners out there. But Ive met people who run games who have been shaken down by local mafia type groups for cuts of the action, and theres no doubt some of these people cave.

I think I was pretty naive about it all 3-4 years ago when I really didnt know what was up and just wanted to play cards. Now I just have no desire whatsoever to play in club games, and not because Im worried about the cops.....
  • That may well be, Wetts, but these owners would not be getting "the arm" put to them by organized crime if they were able to operate out in the open. At least, no more so than any other legitimate business. It is the prohibition of card rooms that is the problem, in the same way that the "War on Drugs" has been a collossal (sp?) waste of resources and manpower. If there is a desire for a thing, someone will come along to fulfill that desire. In the case of poker rooms, it is foolish to prohibit their existence, when the government could be licensing, taxing, and inspecting them instead.
  • IMO, and I know I have lots of them, lol. You will never see legalized card rooms except for casinos. There is always an element of danger. Organized crime and I don't mean the gangsters at Queens Park probably are strong arming a number of these rooms.
I personally do not attend any of these clubs. A friendly game with people I know is my comfort zone.
Problems being is that an outsider can get into a game with significant stakes and end up being a mole for a group that can cause a lot of heartache for people involved.
It could be the following week or next month. You could find yourself inside staring down the barrel of an automatic weapon. 50 or 60 card players are still no match for 4 or 5 guys with guns screaming hand it over or you're DEAD. Even then there is no guarantee that they are not crazy enough to shoot you.
  • and I thought I knew all the clubs in Toronto.. funny I was at a club the other night w about 70 people in attendance (5 tables running - Omaha, 1/2, 2/5) and they waste their time on a 17 person bust. Don't get it??

  • Firearms and DRUGS. Go figure.
If you are running a game every night of the week, Selling or letting drug use go on, Selling alcohol and have a couple of working girls relieving some of the players. You're gonna get popped. Drugs and Guns are more than likely the reasons why this game got BUSTED.
  • Best part is when I loaded the article, there was an OLG ad at the bottom!

    Attachment not found.
  • Well, at least we know who filed the complaint . . .
  • From the article
"Investigators allege illegal poker tables were being operated inside the club and illegal payouts were provided after patrons paid to play at the tables."
That is how you run a tournament right.

So, it was the tables' fault?

Nobody tell Tableton, or he may go rogue . . .
  • Anyone hear about another poker raid last night?
  • Rrrraaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiidddd !!!
