Villain is fairly competent. VPIP 22 PFR 17 over 100 or so hands.

I have 3 bet him a couple of times before and he has fold both times.

  • I suspect A with weak kicker; no further action on turn or river would indicate they want to check it down and hope they had you beat. Any further bet on the turn or river probably would have won the hand.
  • Check, betting there induces possible bluff attempts by villian. You can't call any big bets on the river if he makes a move.

I wouldn't be surprised here if he wakes up with AX or JX. Flush draw/straight draw is remote but I think as played you don't have enough information to make a value bet on the river.

The only time I bet the river is if in this case I put a bet out on the turn. It may be on of those times where you can barrel all three streets and you may get villian call down and fold river if they are holding KQ, or a club draw.
  • I am checking there also.. any bet just seems odd given the turn play.
  • River: ($13.25) 6d (2 players)
Hero checks, button bets $7.50, Hero?

    Am I ever good here?

If button likes to bluff a lot, possibly, or maybe he is just betting based on how you played it. On button he is probably raising any ace, but could also have things like KQ, KT or a smaller pocket pair. The way you played the hand kinda says that you don't have an ace and don't have a jack so he could be taking a stab at the pot. I'm a fish so I'd probably call to look him up since you can potentially win $20.75 for $7.50, but the proper play is probably a fold. I have a feeling though that you were probably ahead on the flop but the jacks ended up improving his hand.
  • I think most of the time your opponent is going to bet that turn if he has a J. First of all there is a flush draw out there and if you do have an A you will be calling at least 1 bet. So i dont think he has a J. Another note is how long did it take you to check the river? I like to tank here and then check (something small but i think its relative). OK so now he bets weak 1/3 on river....hhmmm monster, weak A, or missed draw. Monster - Na hes gonna try and get some value on the turn i beleive and a lot of the time if he missed value in the hand somewhere you will see a big river bet to try and get that value back that was missed. Some of the time he is going to check back a weak A on the river. So IMO i think he has a weak A and a miss the majority of the time and im leaning towards a miss that is trying to take a decent pot with a weak bet. So on the river I prefer a check raise jam - 1st (i would like you to be a bit deeper for this but still enough i think). If you did tank check the river i think i check fold and if you snap checked river i think check call. - 2nd
  • His river bet is for half the pot wader. He is giving me 3-1 on a call. Could be a bluff could be for value.

The thing I see is this. I don't see many Jacks in his 3 bet calling range here except for JJ or AJ and if he has either of those hands so be it. The rest of the hands that he could have either missed their draw (and can't call a shove) or are Ax hands that can't call a shove here either. Maybe AK could talk himself into it.

When he checked behind on the turn for pot control he defined his holdings IMO.

I shipped it and he folded.

Good point about timing wader. I used most of my clock before checking the river and then shoved quickly over his bet. =D

I also think he snap calls if I lead the river with any reasonable sized bet
