Looking for cash set ...

Hi All,

New to Poker forum.ca! I have been watching Chiptalk and HPT for a while, but only recently ran into this site! I have been playing NLHE for about 5 years now, when it fits in the schedule... Mainly home games with a few friends.

Lately we have been playing more cash games than tourney style and would like to set up a cash set for these events! I know pretty much what i want, but was wondering what others had on this forum!

Feel free to post photos of your chips!

Also, has anyone ordered chip sets from the US? What kind of duties should i expect? I wanted to piece together a Paulson's Pharaohs set, but they start at 1$... I need to introduce a 0.25$ chip! Our games are usually 0.25/0.50... So mainly looking for 0.25, 1, 5 and a few 25$.

If anyone has anything interesting to sell, let me know! Please provide photos showing condition, quantities, and asking price!

Thanks,

ML

  • OMG where to start.....so many options,

Do you want the paulson feel? or will you like ceramics?

The Pharoahs are really nice and they do come with 25c chips you just have to look really hard (they're blue with white). You may consider some used casino Paulsons. You can usually find used paulson casino chips for reasonable prices. You'll pay less duty if you get them to ship the chips with USPS. Keep checking chiptalk cause at least you'll see a lot of options. Check ebay all the time and you'll see quarters some time but they're usually a little more dear.

Check out the Protoge line of chips if you want to buy new. They're awesome but expensive. Good luck.
  • I have been looking at Ebay and Ct daily! Found a nice set, but way too much $$$. Are used chips (casino) subject to duties also? Has anyone ordered chip sets from the US and what kind of duties can i expect on a 400$ set? I remember buying a 50$ item on Ebay 2 years ago and receiving a bill from UPS for 42$ in duties and 'brokerage fees' when i questioned it, they offered to reduce the fees to 17$ or something like that... so i have been very hesitant to order anything else! (Mind you i ordered a lot of smaller items without any issues!)

Tks for the reply 800Over! Will look into Protoge... just for fun!

As for Ceramics... never really handled them to see the difference... But liked the Paulsons i saw!
  • I am no expert on this but I bought my Palson set from a dealer in Toronto.

They were $ 650.00 for a 500 piece set. Really nice chips.

  • There are no duties on items made in the US. What you are paying is a brokerage fee to clear it through customs to prove that there are no duties. When they do that they charge gst on top based on the value of the goods. It is a pure cash grab and UPS clears everything through customs EVERYTIME because they make a TON of money by charging these bogus brokerage fees. If you ship via USPS, 99% of packages will cross the border without being brokered through customs. High value items, heavy items and large items may or may not. If it is small, light and not very valuable it is very unlikely that it will be cleared by customs. Especially if you are purchasing from an individual not a business. Think about it - so many packages cross the border every day it is just not possible to individually clear them all.

ddmilcan is a broker so he may have a different perspective but this is the reality of what happens. I'm not saying brokerage fees are bogus, just that what UPS charges for this 'service' is a joke.

That is why CT is the way to go. Most people on there are simply looking for a good home for their chips. They charge reasonable prices and don't rip you for shipping. Some guys there are clearly looking to make a profit, but even then, they are usually fair. Out of the dozens of packages I've had shipped to me via USPS I got hit with brokerage, twice. Even then the USPS fee is reasonable <$20. I've had one package from a CT member go missing. Their word and rep on CT is very important to them and he refunded my money when the package didn't arrive.

Thanks Moose! Glad to see I'm not the only one that finds UPS a little out of whack!!! I will keep searching CT and hopefully hit something else i like! Like almost everything listed lately!

Like everything else... reputation is key! Doubt that i would buy direct from a seller with no history on a trade site!
  • You should avoid UPS and Fedex - they charge pretty outrageous brokerage fees.

Your best bet is USPS. You'll rarely be charged any fee at all. Although I did have to pay $70 GST on a recent chip purchase sent from the US by USPS - but it was a large purchase. I've purchased many chips from the US and had them sent by USPS and they've arrived at my door with zero additional fees.

It's too bad you weren't looking earlier - I just sold a BCC Mardi Gras cash set (25¢, $1, $5).
