Becoming a Dealer

Does anyone know what sort of wages a dealer can expect to make at a casino?

I imagine it probably isnt much, but I am considering it for a part time job/ poker education.

cheers,

Irah

  • I don't know (short answer)

about B.C. but doesn't it seem like the GTA needs a dealer school? Did you take some class/course Irah?
  • Great Canadian Casinos requires a 6 week course from the Canadian Gaming Institute in dealing.

I believe that you must first begin with blackjack, then you have to take another course for poker.

I have yet to take the course from the Canadian Gaming Institute, but there is one near my house, so I will go check out the details.
  • I was looking into becoming a dealer back in June of this year when the Candian National Exibition was looking for dealers. They offered blackjack, roulette, hold em and a couple others. I didn't actually deal or go through the process. I wanted to deal just on weekends for fun (as I already have a day job) but it wasn't worth to pay the fees for training for what I would be making.

In Ontario the first thing that you need before any casino looks at you is a license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario ( http://www.agco.on.ca/en/h.home.html ). Just fill out the application and pay a fee. I believe its around $165.00.

With the CNE, they offered to train you for 2 weeks. YOU would have to pick up the tab. I believe it was around $150 for the training. I'm pretty sure a real casino would invest in you and offer it at no cost to you.

When that was all said and done, you worked at the CNE for up to 2 weeks getting paid $11.00 + tips. I would natuarlly assume that a real casino pays more than that as people work their for a living. I will not begin to speculate as to where they start.

I personally don't think working at a casino will be good in the long run, it will pay your bills and help you survive in the midterm, but if you're a student and looking for fun, why not?
  • I was talking to a Blackjack dealer at Niagara a while ago and he said he got paid around $40000 a year......he said the amount of applications they get is insane.....not sure if a holdem dealer is the same or not.....
