would you bet the river here?

While the hand below does involve a bad beat, this is not a bad beat story.

My question is, would you have put in a bet on the river, or simply checked?

I'm sure people can also pick apart other mistakes i may have made earlier in the hand, so please feel free to point those out as well.

  • I know this isn't a very interesting response, but I would have played it exactly as you did, on every street, FWIW.

    Cheers,

  • I would have played it exactly the same pre-river. I prefer playing it fast here with the flush draw on board.

I certainly would have bet the river, and I think I would have even re-raised. If your opponent is willing to cap it on the turn with only trip 9's with a Ten kicker, he's likely to cap it again on the river in cases where your bottom full house is still good. With the opponent playing like this, you'll be value betting the river far more often than paying him off in the long run.

The river play also depends a lot on your assessment of your opponent's skill level. I'll generally slow down with the river betting (probably bet-call as you did, or check-call if I give my opponent lots of respect) against an opponent that I think is a decent player.

Just calling when raised on the river is okay, but I'm usually looking to get full river value in cases where the opponent merely has trip 9's or 78.

  • I agree with Scotty, I don't play limit on stars so I don't know the normal quality of players there, but in a normal 1/2 game I play most players would raise the river with just the set. Re-raising for value might have even been correct.
  • thanks for the opinions.

i hadn't been at the table long so i couldn't really judge the quality of the player, but he didn't seem to play any two cards but i had seen him win a pot making two pair with suited connectors.

I was fully willing to credit him with having trips based on how the hand developed. I also considered that unless he was playing absolute crapt the only way he had a 9 in his hand was if he was playing A9s, 9T, or maybe 89.

So when i was faced with both the A and T on the board, i had to figure 2 of the 3 possible cards that could kill me were on the board.
