Ottawa

I'm going down to ottawa this weekend and was wondering if they had a casino with holdem there. And if they hold tournaments.

  • Sorry man, the only casino in the Ottawa area is on the Quebec side and it offers zero poker ( for now they say). There might be a small tourney 40$ freezeout at Broken Q Pool hall but it hasn't been confirmed yet.
  • Nearest place to Ottawa with a poker room is the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino

    www.mohawkcasino.com

which is in NY state, just across the border from Cornwall. About 1 hour 15 min drive from Ottawa, toll bridge to the USA, CDN$3 either way.

They do have weekly tournaments (check the website for the schedule), usually with re-buys. The tournaments are well run, but unplayable IMO due to fast blind structures. (Okay, well run *except* for the blind structures.)

It's a non-smoking poker room inside a smoking casino (smoking is allowed a few yards from the poker area). The poker area itself has very high ceilings and is not at all smokey.

It's a small room. Usually 3 to 5 tables total running with (all holdem) 3-6 limit, 5-10 limit, and 2-5 (blinds) NL, buy-in from $100-$500. There's a bad beat jackpot (AAAJJ losing & some other technicalities qualifies), and the limit games are played with a kill to a double game (5-10 or 10-20) after a big pot (pot >= 6*number of players). Dealers are generally fairly good to very good--- a few are new, but are also generally good, though, sometimes learning. Games are generally soft, often even to the tune of my KK cracked by Q2s, no pair, backdoor flush.

I have played one local Ottawa poker tournament. Among other things, players were allowed to put their tournament chips in their pockets with no chip counts recorded and walk around outside during the breaks. Notice how many local Ottawa poker tournaments I've played in.

I haven't found any home cash or tournament games that have interested me in Ottawa, but I haven't looked very hard either. Akwesasne every now and then along with playing online is usually enough of a poker dose for me.

  • I've heard rumours that the Hull Casino (though I guess it isn't called that anymore, but it was when I lived there) will be putting in some poker tables in December. Heard it from someone who heard it from someone, so take it with a grain of salt.

I have heard this one too, and in my case, directly. On the other hand, it was directly from someone who I am quite certain would not know what they are talking about. ;)

I'd put all my chips on Niagara Falls getting a poker room before Hull. Translation: It ain't gonna happen.
